LO night weaned herself. She started sleeping 8+ hours at 8 weeks, then would feed around 5am and go back to sleep until 7:30 or 8am. We fed on demand and she would cluster feed during the day, and sleep through the night.

LO was a big baby, so our pedi wasn't concerned that she was sleeping so long at night at such a young age.

@maybebaby: at 3.5 months DS was also waking up 1-2x a night and i fed him. He started sleeping til 5:30 am at 6 months... so I'd feed him, and he'd go right back to sleep until 8 am.

Now at 7 months he STTN until 6 am and is up for the day. He naturally just did it on his own without any intentional night weaning on my part.

Your LO might just grow out of it in a couple more months. I think 3.5 months is still really young!

We sleep trained at 4 months, cause R wouldn't go to sleep on her own. After that she would STTN most nights, then started waking up at 5 to eat. Then it started getting earlier and earlier, and teething hit. We were back to multiple wakeups, but I don't think she was hungry, just wanted help going back to sleep. So at her 6 months appointment, the doctor said she doesn't need to eat in the middle of the night, and to let her CIO. So we did and she is now back to STTN. In return eating better during the day, taking better naps, and all around happier baby.

@maybebaby: Yeah, I mean, for some babies, it definitely doesn't work! Like Xander won't sleep through it so it does end up waking him up, but he goes right back to sleep and it doesn't seem to affect him and it's the only way that I can get close to 7 hours, so I keep doing it! If it works for you, I'd do it too so you can get some decent sleep in yourself! A happy Mama makes for a happy baby! :)

@JoJoGirl: This makes total sense. We have our 4 month apt soon, so I will see what she says then. Like you said with A, J is clearly using the 1 or 2 feedings at night for hunger, not comfort, so it seems like those should be kept for sure! I just wish he would eat more before bed--I can barely get him to eat at all so we often times end up giving him a bottle of pumped milk so he doesn't go to bed on an empty stomach.

@scg00387: so true, if it isn't sleep it's something else!!

@Adira: Ya know, we had done a dream feed for a while and that was working to some extent (he even slept through it!) and I just stopped doing it because someone at Isis was very anti the dream feed and I felt guilty about it (she never really explained why she was so against it, but made me feel bad for doing it!) I should trust my mommy instinct--it worked for us (ie first wake up at 4 or 5 rather than at 1 or 2) so that is all that matters!

@edelweiss: I mean...I would love it if he was ready and it was right for him--what mom DOESN'T want more sleep! But I think I am more coming from a place of "I feel like everyone's baby is sleeping--what am I doing wrong!?"

@Bookish: Sigh. Very, very happy for (and jealous of) you!!! :D

@Bookish: lo did that too. She slept six straight the night we came home from the hospital and gradually increased that to 12 straight at 12 weeks. In the beginning I hated talking about it cause other moms would give me death stares.

LO night weaned herself at 6 weeks. She started sleeping longer and longer on her own, and since we had the Dr's ok to stop waking her to feed, we let it happen. Didn't do CIO or any sort of sleep training. She just wasn't hungry at night anymore. She now nurses in the AM, gets 4 bottles at daycare, and nurses 2x at night. Growing like a weed, too! :)

I don't think this is normal though!! I get lots of shock when I tell people she was STTN that early. I did not expect her to for months and months, so don't feel like you are doing something wrong!

@maybebaby: oh you're not doing anything wrong at all! i didn't know if you were coming from a place of really needing the night feedings to be over. everybody's baby is NOT sleeping through the night at that age. i think it can feel that way because those with STTN babies tend to speak up more. i support you whatever you decide, mama!

I let E lead on this one, and he eventually started STTN right before 12months. At 3.5 months he was probably waking 3 times a night still. We tried to sleep train at 4.5 months, but it was obvious he wasn't ready to drop all his night feeds. I WOH, so even though I was sleep deprived, I enjoyed the extra snuggle time.

11 weeks.

DS kind of night weaned himself. He was waking up 1x at that point and the last week or so hadn't been nursing much at all. I tried giving him a paci instead of nursing (he was taking them at this time, thankfully), did it for 3 nts and he was weaned/STTN 11-12 hours the fourth night. He's been a pretty consistent STTN aside from teething. I think I've nursed him at night once since then and it was when he had a MOTN wakeup during cutting his top four teeth. He didn't even really want it -- but I thought it was 6am, when it was actually only midnight!

@ShootingStar: It sounds like it makes sense, but from my experience it didn't work for us. She was still nursing around the clock at 12 weeks :( But, every baby is different, so there is nothing wrong with trying it when DS gets here. You will know if it is working pretty quickly!

@oliviaoblivia: Th author makes sure to stress that your baby needs to weigh enough (and again I'm not sure of that number) and to eat enough during the day before you can attempt to night wean. And the point of the method was to gradually reduce at a rate they're comfortable with. Not just let them cry it out and not feed them cold turkey. Seemed to make sense to me, but what do I know *shrugs*.

I'm not sure if this will help you or not, but I feed Xander on MY schedule at night so that I can get sleep! I know this doesn't work for every baby, but it works for mine and maybe it will work for yours!

I nurse Xander around 6:00 and he goes to bed by 7:30. Then I do a dream feed (that usually wakes him up, dream feed fail) at 9:00 and put him right back to bed. Then we BOTH get to sleep from about 10:00 to 5:00! Then I feed him again!

He had started doing a 7 hour stretch around 11 weeks (or maybe a little earlier), so I started feeding him at 9:00 so that his 7 hour stretch would be when I was sleeping too!

She night weaned herself around a year, which is when we stopped cosleeping and she crib trained. There were days when she still nurses during the night, but that's usually when she is sick or teething. At 16 months I would say maybe 3 times a month now she needs to nurse overnight.

@ShootingStar: mine did 12 at 12 but was closer to 16 pounds. Not feeding a newborn sounds kinda negligent.

L night weaned on her own at three months then around the six month growth spurt needed one feed again. Hit a bunch of big milestones and teeth and sttn again at eight months. Let him lead you.

@maybebaby: I think our LOs are just a few days apart and we still have consistently two wakeups per night. Although I'm tired I'm not doing anything to discourage it because I am back to working full time, and I want to protect my supply and nurse as much as possible so I don't have to leave so much milk during the day. I also don't want to deprive her of closeness if she is making up for missing me during the day. So you're not alone in the night waking! I don't think we've ever had a night with even just a single wakeup, we always have at least two.

@maybebaby: Yeah, I can only warn you that it never stops :) We heard from everyone that their kids STTN as early as 3 weeks, my sister & mom swore up and down once he hit 12 lbs he would, etc. etc. Now that he is STTN (at 20 lbs, ha!) they've all moved on to his first steps and when that is normal. If it's not one thing, it's another! I will say that my LO has always nursed much quicker at night. If you really think he is not genuinely hungry, I would try rocking him sleepy or having your DH go in instead. At least with my LO he always made it quite clear if he still needed to eat. Around 4 months I stopped automatically nursing when I went in - I would try to soothe him in other ways until he made it clear he needed to nurse or if he woke up again in less than 30 minutes. Hang in there!

@maybebaby: @JoJoGirl: I have yet to meet a nursing full time WOHM whose baby STTN - like 8+ hours. I remember people trying to tell me how to sleep train, etc., because J wasn't sleeping straight through (and didn't until 9.5 months, AF returned shortly after).
I knew that he needed me at night after being apart for 9 hours. It's totally normal to have them wake once or twice (more when teething, growth spurt, etc).

And he was up 4-6x/night until 12 months when I started to lessen the time spent nursing at each wakeup. He now wakes usually 2x/night--both relatively close to wakeup time (ex: sleep at 7:30, up to eat at 4 and 4:45, and 5:30--to stay up at 5:30 or 6).

@maybebaby: I had the same issue! Don't forget "STTN" means different things to different people, some folks say it when babies sleep 6 hrs (12-6), others 8 hrs (9-5). I had our 4 month appt this week and our ped said she should be consistently doing an 8 hr stretch, which she is -just for us, it's 8-4! Then she's back down til 6 or 7.

I did a TON of reading on various sleep websites last week asking the same question about if having 1 night waking is unusual at this age and if we can night wean, and agree with others ... it's incredibly common to have one night waking upwards of 6, 7, 8 months and beyond. I think your ped should definitely make the call (and Isis says the same).

Especially considering I found out our little nugget only weighs 12.5 lbs at 4+ months, I definitely am not ready to try and night wean her yet. The main thing I will look for is when it seems she's nursing for comfort rather than hunger. Now her feeding lasts a good 10-12 mins (long for her).. once it's down to less than 7ish, I'll assume she wasn't that hungry to start.
