@Andrea: yeah you set up the log in with the information on your health insurance card. It takes all the guess work out of everything.

@miss-spunkin: Thank you!
Doesn't scare me in the least (we plan to start trying for #2 very soon), although I wonder how it will be next time around- I was diagnosed with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) and induced so I know I will be carefully monitored throughout my next pregnancy

@miss-spunkin: regular prenatal care plus 13 ultrasounds (there were some complications/concerns on some blood test results), a fainting spell at 20 weeks landed me in an ambulance with a trip to the ER (more embarrassing than anything since it happened at a work function in front of 200 people and my CEO), a 4 day stint in the hospital with a severe kidney infection at (36 weeks), plus delivery and an extra day in the hospital because of LO's high bilirubin levels came to 80K...

5 weeks postpartum I got to tack on another 20K to my 2011 medical bill total for the year because I had gallbladder surgery (which they attribute to the pregnancy) and was in the hospital for another 4 days- I made a horrible pregnant person. But oh so happy to report that LO is perfect in every way (and worth all the medical woes)

I pre-registered with the hospital. When I did this, they inquired if I had pre-paid my doctor to cover the deductible and since I had, they agreed to post-bill me. I suspect had I not already paid my $2500 deductible to the doctor, I would have been required to pre-pay.

That being said, I got the bill after it had been processed through insurance about a month later. But once I was actually billed they were hot on the trail to collections.

My bills started coming around 4 weeks after, and I just got the last one this past week.

After. The hospital has to add everything up, then submit it to the insurance company for them to pay their portion, and then I’ll be billed for whatever my portion is. I’ve never had to pay anything up front when going to a hospital, even an ER visit. Just receive the bill several weeks after.

Also, your LO, from the minute they are born, is covered separately from you under whatever insurance plan you will put them on. So the insurance company has to wait for you to add LO to the plan, then determine what portion of LO’s bill they will cover, and then bill you for your/LO’s portion.

hahaha
I have a $500 deductible and 2K out of pocket maximum. I've already met my deductible and not sure where I am on the 2k oot. Should probably check that. But at least I know the MAX my hospital bill will be is 2k!

It's taking about 1-1.5 months for me to get my bills for my OB appointments, so I'm hoping it will be the same for the hospital stay. I have a $1000 OOP maximium, and after paying my deductible and OOP portion of my ultrasound and other tests, I'll probably be down to only owing $600 for the hospital stay. At least, that's what I'm trying to convince myself!

@Andrea: you should be able to look it up online. I can access my insurance info online and it shows all the claims that have been made for all my doctors visits, it really adds up!

I'm hoping my hospital bill will be tiny because my insurance premium is high and I was told everything was covered except a $150 per day copay for every night I stay at the hospital.

Since I am scheduled for a C-section, I have to pay my deductible up front. After that, my small hospital bill (probably around $300 for my stay) should come a few weeks after the delivery.

Our hospital you can prepay if you don't have insurance and they will match up to 3K. However, for those of us that have insurance we will get the bill in the mail 2-3 weeks after we get home. I think our insurance will cover most of it, but anything it doesn't we will obviously pay out of pocket.

I think my total bill was around 15-20k! Thank God for insurance!

Is the hospital bill for labor typically paid at the hospital or does the bill come after the fact?

I know some ladies have to actually pre-pay. But for those that didn't.

Thanks!
