Shortly after 2, I think. She was doing well with going up and down the stairs and if we were worried, we just put something in front of the stairs.

We still have them at the stairs and DD is 2.5... but we probably will just keep them because they are kinda useful for keeping the dog away from the front door (he's an escape artist).

We moved into our current house when LO was 18 months and the only gate we put up was at the top of the stairs. A year later and its still there. I worry about him getting up in the middle of the night, being half asleep, and tripping down them. LO2 will be here soon and other gates may be added but I don't see taking the top of the stairs one down for a long time.

We didn't use them with baby 2 and she is awesome on the stairs. We just taught her the right way to climb up and how to come down safely so that they were never an issue. She's 16 months now.

EI wants them using the stairs fairly early. I know this because my son was in EI for speech but as part of his evaluations they had to bring in a physical therapist. Since we taught our kids to turn around and crawl down backwards (facing the stairs) for safety the physical therapist chided me and said they should be able to walk down by about 21 months which is when he had the exam. It actually caused my son to score a bit behind on the gross motor exam - for that one reason! Not enough to qualify for EI for gross motor skills, obviously. But I was super surprised.

We moved into our current house from a one level when LO was 16 months and we just didn't put them up! She was fine on stairs then.

We got rid of the gates at around 20 months. She was really careful going up and down. Put them back up the months ago when DD2 was seven months and beelining for the stairs every time the gate was left open.

We don't have stairs in our condo, but we have a gate blocking off the entry way where the recycling bin is and the shoes and such. C is 27 months and I would say at this point it's only for our own convenience. When we visit friends with stairs now I can tell her she can only go to the third stair and sit and she obeys 80% of the time? She's sort of obsessed with stairs but I still don't feel comfortable with her on them by herself. So I'd say by 2.5 or so I'd be ok with getting rid of it?

I have other friends who have done away with them way earlier though. The stairs are just really tempting to C (despite the fact that we have two flights in our building to get to our condo, that she takes forever to climb...)

We still use a baby gate at the bottom of our stairs that go up to the bedrooms. It's one of those basic baby gates and it sort of just rests there because of the way our stairs are. It still keeps LO from climbing up them but I hate that gate! I'm hoping in the next few months she can master the stairs so I can get rid of it. I'm still a little nervous about removing it now though, so I'll wait!

How old was your LO when you removed the baby gates? If you still have them up when do you plan on taking them down?
