Oh and our pediatrician suggested starting between 4 and 6 months. We waited a while because she just wasn't ready (and neither was I!)

We started purees at 5.5 months. Her first food was an avocado mashed up. I have recently started giving her baby oatmeal for breakfast but we never did cereal.

La Leche League says middle of the first year for foods ...

We never do cereals, but then I also delay foods completely until baby can eat things in their natural state (so no purees and stuff either). Usually that's around 10 months.

I think if you want to wait, then wait - every baby is ready in their own time.

We started LO on cereal at 4.5 months, but he really wasn't a fan. We took a few weeks off, then started him on sweet potatoes just after 5 months, and he did great.

Go with your gut! Waiting until 6 months is perfectly fine!

Our ped also said we could start any time we were comfortable between 4 and 6 months. I said we wanted to wait until 6 months which he totally supported. We have her next check up at 6 months and he suggested we start one week before the appointment so we can discuss with him how she does with it.

I think if you aren't ready and you don't think LO is ready, you should wait. It won't hurt her to wait until she's closer to 6 months (if that's when you decide is the best time).

We started solids at 5.5 months. We skipped cereal and DS's first food was avocado. I tried giving him cereal down the road and he didn't like it.

We waited until 6 months plus a few days, mostly due to scheduling and general laziness. But we started with oatmeal and not rice cereal.

The AAP recommendation is 6 months.

Here's an article saying that people generally start babies too soon on solids. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/25/health/many-babies-fed-solid-food-too-soon-cdc-finds.html?hp

Hope this is helpful! Lo is starting only now to get the hang of solids (she's almost 8 months). She was totally not interested early on. We're doing a mixture of BLW and purees.

If you don't feel ready, don't. If you really feel that your LO isn't ready, listen to that instinct. Also, feel free to overrule DH on this. No, seriously.

I waited until closer to 6.5 months and started him on straight solids. He's never had cereal; I don't see the point.

We started at 4 months but DS hated cereal so I tried again at 5. He ate it a little bit more and then I was like screw it. It was a pain and he loved the boob more. I introduced fruits and veggies at 6 months and he loves them, so we pretty much skipped cereal altogether.

We started at 5 months with sweet potato and oatmeal (I felt it was more nutritious than rice cereal). We started before 6 months because we had some weight issues as well. Our pedi has also never heard of BLW and also said we could start anytime between 4-6 months. If you're not ready, wait! There's really no rush.

I started cereal and solids at 4 months, although I was planning on waiting until 6 months. My doctor suggested started them earlier as my LO was having issues gaining weight (and keeping her food down due to extreme reflux) and she has done great and finally started to gain weight.

I would try to wait closer to 6 months. Solids are a pain! And as solids don't really provide substantial nutrition for the first year, why not wait until she can start on the good stuff-veggies and fruits?

ETA: We started with sweet potatoes a little before 6 months, and then introduced oatmeal several weeks later.

We met with a different doctor than usual for her 4 month check up this morning, and they said to start giving cereals (and had absolutely no idea what i was talking about when I brought up BLW).

I'm not ready. And I don't think she is quite ready. But I guess she has technically met all the "milestones" required for cereal feeding. And DH wants to start ASAP. I thought AAP said 6 months, but everything I'm finding online says "4-6 months to start".

Any advice? I'm really torn about this decision. She is 4 months and 5 days old right now. She eats 30-35 oz a day (combo of breastmilk and formula). She's 15 lbs, 13 oz.
