On demand from beginning... Drives me nuts though that they can't suck all they want in one shot. They have to eat every 2 hours or so....and cry hysterically if u don't get them milk fast enough.

From the time we got home from the hospital- we really aren't big on schedules in our house. It was shorter earlier on, and we had to supplement for a while too, but these days he usually goes between 2-3 hours between feedings during the day. At night is when I get longer stretches.

Thanks for all the feedback! I was a little worried because she would go for longer than usual stretches between feedings then before (4-5 hours sometimes) during the day, especially when she is napping on me or DH's chest.

Her pees and poops are been normal, so hopefully I'll start feeling more comfortable feeding on demand. I know it's mainly mental on my part, and just need to get over it.

Thanks again!

From day 4ish? The clinic at our hospital said I should try and feed her every 2 hours(!) until she reached her birthweight, but it was such a fight to wake her and feed her. Plus she was a great eater, lost less than 5% of her weight before she started gaining again and had no jaundice. My instincts said go on deans an it was way better.

We've fed on demand since the beginning, even when we had to supplement the first couple of weeks because LO had problems latching. She normally eats every 2-3 hours, but sometimes when she is cranky or going through a growth spurt (she's almost 8 weeks) she will eat every hour. At night she'll do one 5 hour stretch of sleep.

I am not sure if we mean the same thing by feeding on demand, but i feed LO on demand, meaning when she shows hunger cues. For us this has been every 3-4 hours during the daytime. She is now 6 months and still on that routine, although we will see how solids change that. Every baby is different, but i dont think my LO would have lasted that long between meals at that age.

I started feeding on demand from the very beginning, but we didn't have any serious problems. She's also just started going longer than an hour between feedings (only when she's awake... she goes much longer when sleeping). According to everything I've read, you should produce according to demand. If you're worried about it, maybe pumping between feedings will help keep supply up.

LO is 6 weeks old today, and finally established breastfeeding. We had to supplement the first couple weeks due to a combination of LO's transfer issues and my supply. I am now just starting to produce enough (approx. 3-4 oz) per feeding, and she is extracting much better now. I tried to start feeding on demand, which is about every 4-5 hours, compared to my every 3 hour scheduled feedings. Still a little nervous if that is the right thing to do, and if it will make my supply decrease.

So my question is when did you start feeding on demand or did you continue feeding on a schedule?
