We're not there yet, but we're going to take an infant safety/CPR class soon (before LO starts solids). Maybe something like that would give your husband more confidence?

@winniebee: I think that's part of the problem, that DH needs to watch him eat more. The one time he watched me give him larger pieces of food, E choked and gagged. I've done it before and since then without issue, but that one time!

I have been giving him finger foods, cut small, since about 7 months. At first, I just gave puffs and very tiny pieces and gradually started giving bigger pieces. He only got good at picking up food after practicing quite a bit (by 8 months)At 9 months he can handle bigger pieces. Example - This morning I sliced banana into slices that were probably 1/2 inch thick and then quartered the slice. He ate them no problem (by himself). My husband was very nervous at first - and sometimes he does cough when he eats - but after watching him eat for awhile, my husband came to realize that my son had good instincts and spits out what he can't handle (or coughs it up!)

My daughter was not a purée fan. So we started her on chunkier food by 7 months. She didn't even have any teeth but she managed with no problems.

Around 6.5 months? We started with purees at a week before she turned 6 months. Then abotu 2 weeks later I started doing chunkier purees then I switched to letting her gnaw on carrots, celeries, bread etc. I find she does better if I give her bigger pieces. She is really good about fishing pieces out of her mouth if they are too big. By about 7.5/8 months she got REALLY good at feeding herself. Now at almost 10 months she 99% feeds herself except for yogurt, soup, etc.

@kiddosc: my husband was also really scared at the thought of BLW. But once we started he was much better when he saw how good M is at it!

I'll bump this up for you guys.

My LO is almost a year and I still cut his food up into smaller chunks (but not super tiny). He hasn't figured out how to bite off a piece of food and if it's a bigger piece he will shove the whole thing in his mouth (which I don't like but is absolutely hilarious). He has never choked though!! He'll just spit everything out if the piece was too big :).

I've been wondering this too. LO is also 9 months and loves to feed herself. She usually one meal a day of all finger foods, but were still cutting them pretty small... Like the size of a puff.

E is 9 months old. I want to give him larger pieces of banana, toast, or something like a whole green bean, foods the size of an adult finger. That way he can hold on to them and get them in his mouth, he can't pick up small pieces and put them in his mouth very well. DH is VERY against this because he thinks E will choke.

He had his 9month Dr. appt today and I had DH ask about it (I have to work and couldn't go) fully expecting them to support me, but they didn't! They said only to give him very small pieces of food and to give him puffs so he can practice picking up the small pieces and putting them in his mouth.

All the people at my doctor's office are super nice, but I really think their methods are somewhat outdated. They told us to give him cereal and start purees at 4 months according to AAP and when I told them the AAP guidelines say 6 months now, they were totally surprised.

Ugh, E is going to be eating purees forever, since I'm pretty sure DH won't let him eat real food until he has a full set of teeth.
