@Corduroy: 2 parties in one day sounds extremely exhausting!

i don't think i will invite that one kid he named this year as i feel it is too late, plus it might be awkward that i am friends with all the parents except for his parent (whoever comes with him).

But definitely next i will let DS pick who he is inviting! I knew he would control the guest list at some point, i was just not sure when or how that started.

This is the year of the birthday party at LO's daycare, which is odd since it is in home 0-6 ages. We've been there 2 years and didn't get an invite until this year. Now we've gotten 5 or 6 in the last 3 months (ages 2, 3 & 4). So I guess this year we will be inviting daycare when LO turns 3.

I'm a little conflicted about it since all our friends have kids LO's age too. I've been inviting those 8 kids to our past parties. I think the party might get too big when combined.

I know at least one other family at daycare had a morning party with daycare kids and then an afternoon party with family & friends. It worked out for them since they had an all day bounce house rental but it sounds exhausting.

@californiadreams: yup, they celebrate at daycare as long as the parents being in something. I bring in something every year. Starting at their first. Fingers crossed I'm still employed when she turns 4 and we will definitely have a friend party!

@looch: this is exactly our situation. It's DS's 5th birthday soon and his first friends party. We invited the whole class (12 kids) and two of our outside friends. I only really know one of the moms, but say hi to the others. We also have quite the language barrier with the other families, so the situation is a bit different.

We started at age 3. We invited 19 kids but less than 10 came and mixed fine with non daycare friends. We are doing the same thing this year. Our daycare typically expects you to invite the whole class if you are going to pass out invites at school. We just put them on the child's sign in/out page as that is where the school leaves messages for parents too.

If we ever have a "big girl" party, we'll invite the whole class. It'll be a little tricky, because her preschool consists of 2 classes, but they often play together because they have an open door policy during playtime. Plus, some of her classmates have siblings in the other room.

But I plan to wait another year or two before we try - that gives us time to renovate! DD is 3.

We might start next year when she turns 4. We only did a bg 1st birthday and had small family dinners for 2-3. Luckily, she is a summer baby, so we won't be obligated to invite her entire class and just the kids she's friends with.

We started inviting daycare friends on LO’s 2nd birthday, but she doesn’t have many non-daycare friends yet so there isn’t that dynamic. For both 2nd and 3rd birthdays, I invited her entire class and both times less than 5 kids actually came, but I don’t think you need to invite the entire class.

We started at age 2 with DD, but we didn't have a party for when she turned 3.

It's a little different in our case though as DH knows some of the parents at daycare as work acquaintances.

DS just started preschool in september and turns 3 in two weeks. We were thinking about inviting kids from his class, but since our party will be at our house and we haven't even formally met any of the other parents, and barely know the kids by name, we decide to wait until next year. We will bring treats in for his bday next Friday!

@californiadreams: I'm with you! DD is in pre-school full time so she's really become close to her pre-school buddies. And then she spends the weekends with all of our family friends and cousins. It can really get out of hand with the amount of people at our kids birthday parties!!

@mediagirl: did you have non-school friends at the party too? And isn't 3 day notice too late at this point? I feel like i have to let it go this year, but definitely next year i will ask him who he wants to invite from school.

@Worrywart: yes, that was a big issue and why i didn't invite anyone, because i would have felt bad picking and choosing who to invite and i definitely did not want to invite the whole class plus the non-school friends that we invite every year. i will have to plan it better next year.

@Mrs D: i was definitely ambivalent about it this year, but we already had plenty of non-school friends to invite. i still feel bad since his comment this morning.

@Mamaof2: so you didn't feel the need to invite the whole class? His class i think used to be 8 kids, but it's now more, somewhere closer to the max of 16 i think.

@Mrs. D: ya it would definitely be different i think if i knew the parents outside of preschool, but I don't.

@regberadaisy: that's why i have been struggling with this! But what makes me feel better is that they do a party/cake at preschool for every kid's birthday, so he will get to celebrate with his school friends AT school.

DD is 3 and so far for her classmates parties this year, all have invited the whole class - 18 kids I believe. The teachers will not let us put invites into cubbies of just a couple of kids, to avoid hurting feelings and having some kids left out. It's recommended at our pre-school to invite the whole class, but I know that's tough and parties can get way too big!

For 3, I asked her if there were friends at school she wanted to invite. I let her invite whoever she wanted. She picked 5 friends and said, "that's it, that's enough." Haha. She loved having her school friends over to play for her birthday party! They had a blast.

We let the teacher know which kids were invited and tucked the invite carefully into her cubby so the parent would see it.

DS is having his third birthday party this weekend so it is probably too late to invite anyone extra. But I had decided to keep it to non-school friends this year because he never sees them outside of school to begin with and we typically have play dates with my friends kids. So i invited my friends and their kids to his birthday party like i have the past 2 years.

I felt bad this morning though because i was telling DS about his party this weekend and naming the kids who are coming and then he added on his friend from preschool indicating that he wants him to come!

I also didn't invite preschool friends because i wasn't sure of the etiquette in terms of who to invite - the whole class? or just the kids he talks about and i can tell he is closer with? If i had to invite the whole class plus his non-preschool friends, it would be way to many people!

Just wondering what i should have done or what other people do? And how do you go about inviting preschool friends when you don't know their parents?
