@MrsBrewer: pretty early, like one week old or so? Mostly because she had a bad latch at first, but also to up my supply. It helped!

I started right away. I was engorged so it helped a lot. Lo is almost 2 weeks old and I already have a mini stash in the freezer :silly: DH loves to be able to help with feedings.

Around 3.5 weeks. I only started then because I wanted to use the hospital grade pumped they had rented out to me and I had to return it at 4 weeks! Baby had a minor tongue tie and they thoufht it might cause problems. He ended up latching like a champ. After that I used my pump maybe 2-3x per week to get milk to practice bottles. Then at about 4m I started my freezer stash since I was going back to work at 5m.

The day she was born, I started using a hand pump (she wouldn't latch).

The next day, I started using the hospital provided electric pump.

Following! I've had my pump out for days & I just never get around to trying to pump. My LO is only 2.5 wks, but I want to make sure I have good supply, can build up a freezer stash & allow DH to be able to feed her. He worries about bonding with her enough & I'd love the break for a feeding or 2.

With DD they had me start in the hospital because she was late preterm and a sleepy, slow nurser. They had me pump after each feeding.

With DS I started pumping at maybe 4 weeks. I would pump once a day after his first morning feed. I did that until he was about 4 months old. It helped me to start a freezer stash. I think I did establish a slight oversupply, but that's been a good thing in my case.

Four weeks, when we introduced a bottle.

@dc yoga bee: Just a word of advice, I would caution against full-on regular pumping in order to address oversupply and forceful let-down. I had problems with oversuppy and forceful let-down and you really want to use pumping only as a last resort because it will trigger your breasts to produce even more milk than they already were. My lactation consultant recommended just using a hand pump to take a small amount of milk right before each feeding in order to reduce engorgement/soften the nipple a bit and take the edge off the initial fire-hose.

I pumped today for the first time for my freezer stash, and LO is 3 weeks old. I still have an oversupply, but the milk comes out so fast LO screams from all the gas even though I recline/lay down/ hand express. I read three weeks is the earliest to begin pumping, and I only pumped one breast while she nursed the other one and got 4oz. I plan to do this once a day in the morning. It already made a world of difference at the next feeding. I gave her the breast I pumped from and no screaming! DH is going to start giving her a bottle next week sometime. I go back to work in 5 more weeks.

About 24 hours with LO1 at an LC's advice. I was in too much pain from my inverted nipple to feed on one side.

I'm pumping as little as possible now with LO2 in his first week. I'm super engorged and starting to show signs of mastitis so I'm pumping to get rid of clogs and pinkness. Hoping I caught things early enough.
