We started with soft sole Bobux at around nine months when LO started cruising, we got A's first pair of proper shoes when she started walking at around 11 months.

My LO is 11 months and I recently starting putting him in Robeez regularly. They protect his feet from being dirty or from sharp things, but do not give him foot support. He can walk holding my hand for short distances, but not independently. He can walk at least as well in the Robeez as barefoot. I only use them if I think it is likely I will put him down to stand or walk. I had been letting LO stand barefoot in public for a long time before he had shoes. I plan to start using real shoes when it gets cold, I think LO will be walking well by then. He is barefoot or in socks indoors, as am I.

C will be 1 in a week and I only put shoes on her if we are going someplace she will be crawling around, like the play ground, or the library, or something. If she is going to be in the stroller the whole time, I don't bother because she likes to pull them off and it's a pain. I'm glad to read these responses though!

She pulls to stand and cruises but isn't walking yet. I plan to have her in Robeez or other soft soles until she is walking really well, which will probably coincide with when the weather starts getting cooler in the fall.

@illumina: this is so annoying!! I hate when people do this! Sometimes when lo is in his stroller he kicks them off so I just throw them in the diaper bag. I hate when people feel the need to comment, especially passive agressively!

Lo wouldn't keep socks on so I started putting shoes on him when he started pulling up around 8 months this winter. We only wear shoes outside the house. Always barefoot at home.

9-9.5 months. I felt pressure from other people IRL who commented on it (someone actually said to LO, but was obviously directed at me "can't your Mum afford shoes for you?") and my other Mum friends' babies were already in shoes, so I did it.

She only wears them if we leave the house though and not for long car journeys.

Our pedi recommended getting him used to shoes at his 9 month check up. We bought him some Stride Rite tennis shoes since they size his feet. However, it's been pretty dang warm and DS's feet sweat like crazy so we've been putting him in sandals or bare feet.

LO started wearing Roobez around 10 months old or so. Once he started walking around 12 months, we moved up to Stride Rite shoes. Our daycare lady told us to get some hard soled shoes as they walk around the neighborhood. He's been wearing them since.

Ladies! You make me feel so much better.

The question all started from this lovely older woman at my daughter's daycare who helps fill in the early shift until the regular providers get there at 7:30. When I dropped her off this morning she asked "Does she have shoes in her bag?" which was probably an innocent question but made me feel like a negligent mom when I realized I hadn't even considered putting shoes on her.

Love this site for a place to ask the "this might be a dumb question" questions. So glad to hear your advice!

Xander's 16 months and still doesn't wear shoes regularly. We have a pair of See Kai Run Smaller that he'll wear if we're going to be walking around outside and a pair of Crocs for the beach and water play, but he doesn't wear them every day. He's been going to daycare barefoot (and we send his shoes with him in case they go outside).

We started using Robeez regularly when he was around 11 months old--he was cruising and it was fall, so it was getting chillier outside. He stayed in Robeez until he was walking confidently at 13 months, and then we really only switched because it was cold and the ground was cold/wet outside. If he had been starting to walk during the summer I would have kept him in robeez or similar very soft soled shoes much longer.

My LO sees a specialist for some delays and he is standing (although not without something to support him) but not walking, and he also had an evaluation by a physical therapist at one point - they both said that the more time they spend barefoot the better, and recommended Stride Rite for when we do put shoes on him.

my g/g twins wore soft crib shoes [Robeez] until they could walk.

to get an idea of shoes, stride rite has some great crib & crawl shoes as well as cruise & walk ones :)

Hey all,

When did you start putting shoes on your LO regularly? My daughter is 10 months old and can pull to stand and I thinks she's probably close to cruising. I leave her barefoot almost all the time, especially since it's the middle of summer. The only shoes I even have for her are "just for fun" ones - like glitter mary janes and a pair of jelly sandals like I had in the 80s. But I've been thinking it's probably time to put shoes on her now that she's standing, especially when we go out in public.

Curious to hear from some other mamas - when did you start putting shoes on your LO? I know Carters and some other brands make shoes especially for new walkers - anyone use those?
