LO2 has a lot of food allergies, and homemade popcorn is one of the most satisfying and enjoyable snacks for him to eat. Then I found out DH had been giving popcorn to DS on the reg when they went on their Friday father/son bank runs (apparently they give out popcorn out of an old fashion movie popcorn machine in the bank lobby??) after he turned 1!! DH insisted DS was fine and that he always watched him and that he drank a ton of water with it (bc it was salty and buttery, duh). I'm holding out until at least 4 (or 5) before LO gets popcorn. Children under 4 are at the highest risk (their airways are small (the back of a toddler’s throat narrows to the diameter of a straw) and the way their eating abilities develop makes them more susceptible to choking). And (other than not giving them unsafe foods and watching out for small objects) there's really nothing you can do to prevent choking.
