Right before 2? We use them very infrequently so they are pretty effective.

Wow okay I guess I'm soft heart-ed maybe? We didn't start time out till he was past 3 if I had to guess a month 38 months maybe. Though he is a pretty good kid. Maybe we will have to start time out sooner with the our littlest one... he's a handful.

Edit: Our practice just asked about how we discipline at his 4 year appointment.

We really started consistently around 20 months, I think. Honestly at 2.5 it doesn't work well and never has but it is all we know to do!

@runnerd: I'd agree with your ped - timeouts worked really well for us. IDK if it was a coincidence, but his hitting phase was really short. And now at almost 2.5 we do them for more things because he can understand better now, but we rarely need them. Maybe once every 2-3 weeks or less?

started around 17m for DD2? She definitely understood what it meant because now if we say timeout it will be instant bad behavior stop. We follow the age + 1 rule.

I think we started around the same time for DD1.

same as @ShootingStar: , only for getting physical and hitting.

We started probably around 16ish months, but not consistently. At our 18 month check-up, which we didn't do until 19 months, the doctor really stressed consistent time-outs will pay off big time, so we are trying hard to follow through!

Maybe around 15 months or so? We pretty much only used them that young for hitting. And it was a pretty direct correlation - hit us or the dog and get put in a corner to face the wall for a minute.

We had DD2's 1 year check up this week and they told us we could start using timeouts as a form of discipline. I was shocked because I feel like she would not understand that at all. I mostly do redirection at this point and she does understand the word "no" even though she usually laughs at me. When did you start using timeouts?
