@Rainbow Sprinkles: I'm so sorry-- that sounds really familiar. It kind of ebbed and flowed-- just when I thought it was as bad as could be, she'd get better, then when I thought we had it under control she'd get worse. It peaked around 2.5-3.5 months though-- I think it was colic, but putting a name on it doesn't help when there is no solution. Could she have bad reflux, since it's happening right after she eats?

We tried gas drops for a while which seemed to help a little bit. She slept in the rock and play, which kept her a little bit on an angle. We bounced on the damn exercise ball until we both wanted to rip it to shreds, even though it was a life saver. Gripe water on the worst nights. Pumping her legs frequently, not just when she seemed gassy. Tummy massage. Holding her upright for 10 minutes after she ate was a big one-- helped keep the acid in her tummy down I guess. Laying her down on her tummy and thumping her back-- weird, but it seemed to help even though she hated being on her tummy-- we would lay her across our legs or flat on the floor on a blanket.

Honestly I have no idea which of these things helped or not-- we tried EVERYTHING. I think mostly she just grew out of it. Now I almost feel the way I did about labor, I remember it was really bad, but now that I'm past it, I have had a hard time remembering how bad it was. She's so cute and happy now, I never thought it would happen. I guess I thought she would be a total grump until she went to college??

Oh and I'll add that one of the reasons we had such a hard time at first was because my LO also had gas/colic/fussiness issues. We started him out in a crib nest similar to what Mrs. Blue blogged about as a transition from the rock n' play adn eventually removed the nest and incline after he was clearly over the colic.

Bedtime started about halfway through my maternity leave at 6 weeks, around the time I put my foot down about getting him into the crib. He still wasn't awake that much during the day, but I was bent on getting him used to being in his room at night. DH fought me a little because I think he was so worried it wouldn't work, but we were pleasantly surprised that everyone slept a lot better with that arrangement. At around 10 weeks he clearly knew the difference between night and day and was awake most of the day and slept longer stretches at night. I really think getting him into the crib early helped us get to that point smoothly!

@Foodnerd81: what made her fussiness get better? Did she grow out of it?
My LO screams like the dickens within 5 minutes of eating, and then screams herself to sleep. She sleeps until it is time to eat again, and then it starts all over again

I think around 8 weeks it was starting to get more predictable-- like 9-10 or so, for bedtime. We didn't start any kind of predictable nap/awake times for a lot longer. I would try, but she just didn't get the memo that babies her age aren't supposed to be up for more than 90 minutes at a time. She was probably close to 4 months by the time naps got at all predictable-- now at 4.5 she goes 1-2 hours awake between naps, depending on time of day, if we are out running errands, and how long she napped before.

She was also super fussy at night for weeks and weeks, witching hour combined with upset stomach/gas/reflux. We did a LOT of cluster feeding and bouncing on the exercise ball. We watched the entire series of Breaking Bad (not season. series) while nursing her pretty much.

We started a pretty set schedule around 8 weeks. Bedtime gradually got earlier as she got older.

around 4-5 weeks. She decided that she needed a flat surface to sleep on...she hated the RNP and wouldn't sleep until she was in her PNP or our bed.

I'm not interested in a feeding schedule since I feed on demand, but I am curious when LO will start to fall ino a schedule or rythm in terms of predictable awake/sleep time.

As of now we are struggling with some colic/reflux/GI issues, so she very rarely is awake and not crying. But for the most part, she is most alert in between 11 pm and 1 am.

I am wondering how long it will take for her to get on a decent bedtime so I am not staying up til 1 am? I don't remember when it happened with #1...everything from her newborn days is a blur!

I am dying to get M on the same bedtime as W!

ETA: I have tried to put her in her bed with dim lights earlier in the evening, but she always ends up fussing and wanting to be awake starting around 10:30 or 11:00.
