We sit down and make financial plans together, DH handles the bill pays and I look at big picture. Sort of as in, DH made the most he's ever made this past year, so there's that. But we didn't see much of it since we had another baby and had to pay for hospital bills + bought a new car. We have been a lot more comfortable this year. We have about 2k in cc debt to pay off though and I want to have more in savings (we've dumped all of our savings into our house lately). After having a secure job for a few years, I figured out how to pay the bills, spend some money on entertainment and save a bit. It is also around the time my then boyfriend, now husband, and I began to get serious and started to save together. It was great practice for marriage because we rarely argue about money. I think that feeling comes at different times for everyone though. I think it has a lot to do with how you grew up and what your family's attitude toward money was. Well the DH came before my self deadline and I do not feel as financially secure. We like stuff and indulged a bit too much and stuff costs. That's when I started feeling secure. I finally paid off what started as $20,000 in cc debt, DH paid down $12,000 in cc debt to around $3,000 thanks to a work bonus, we own a house, and we have a decent amount in savings (we had zero 2 years ago). We still have my student loans and car payment and DH needs a new car bad - his is a money pit. And we're about to have a child!
