At 20 months because we were attempting to potty train her at that time, so we used some youtube videos on the iPad to try to keep her on the potty to get her to pee/poo.

We have just started letting our almost 21 month old watch Bubble Guppies. She watches for a few minutes and then goes back to playing with her toys and books. She has started "asking" for it now, though. Trouble.

She has never used our phones or my (now defunct) tablet for anything, though.

LO wont watch for more than 5 minutes so i dont usually waste the time putting anything on for her.

I let her play toddler games on my phone in emergency situations, but it makes her really nasty so i dont plan to make a habit of it if possible!

@daniellemybelle: my best friend used baby signing time videos with her daughter and when I saw her at 16 months she knew so many signs I couldn't believe it! It definitely affected my view on screen time and I plan on getting the videos when we have a LO.

How do you define "TV"?

We started with videos at around 17 months (or earlier), just those 2-3 minute teethbrushing songs / videos from youtube so I can distract him and brush his teeth. He is often glued to the TV if there is a TV in a restaurant though. Does that count? He is 2 years now and I am adding to that video collection. Still haven't sat him in front of the TV though. Our living room doesn't have a TV so it is actually hard to show him TV.

ETA: Husband has jokingly (?) said maybe our lack of TV time is one of the causes LO is delayed in speech! ha

@littlebug: same. we always have the TV on and DS could care less. he's much more interested in kicking a soccer ball around the house, playing hockey, blocks, play-doh, etc. he does "like" hockey games and some movies but rarely sits to watch them.

I can’t remember exactly when – maybe around 12 months? Honestly, I think TV is a tool in my parenting toolbox like any other tool (aka, not some evil kid-brain-killer) and we’ve found TV to be helpful for LO’s expanding vocabulary.

@daniellemybelle: I think it's helped him with recognizing the signs but he is a little stinker and won't attempt them even though we work on them at every meal! He just grins at us coyly and laughs. He definitely knows what we're doing and why, he just refuses to participate. He's a little young though, at 8 months, and I've heard the babies do better around a year with the signs. Guess we'll see! The video is cute though and he loves watching the babies and the adult do the signs.

We CONSTANTLY have the tv on in our house, but D hardly ever pays attention to it. At 13 months, I can count on one hand the number of times I've turned on a specific show/movie for him, and it's always been when he's sick and needs to just veg. And even then, he only pays attention for about 5-10 minutes before he wants to read a book or play with his blocks. The only thing that ever really sucks him in, funnily enough, is So You Think You Can Dance. I tease that we have a future Broadway Baby on our hands!

At 18 months old, he gets one show at daycare. It's been less than a month since she put a tv in there, mainly for her overnight guests because it's an apartment. At home, he gets about 10 minutes to look at pics of doggies, cats, etc. on Google with DH. We keep it to a minimum. During the weekend, he gets next to none.

@Alivoo01: LO watches sports with DH a lot, though I will ask him to turn her away from the screen. Basketball is her favorite, with all the bright colors, fast movements, and squeaking shoes! I personally don't worry about LO getting a few minutes here & there when she is in the room with us. I think that is different than sitting them down in front of a children's program for a full 30 minutes.

R is almost 12 months and our TV is pretty much always on. She is starting to watch it some. It holds her attention for like a minute (at most) and then she moves on. Sat or Sun morning, DH will put on a cartoon shows or movie and she watches it a little more but really doesn't show any interest in it.

DS (8 months) has a baby signing video that's about 20 minutes long and he's been watching that for a month or so. He watches it a few times a week, usually when I am in a hurry to get something done that has to be done and need a distraction technique. Sometimes the TV is on when he is still up (rare) and he doesn't ever watch or show interest in our shows. The only thing he likes is that one baby signing video and I think it's because we've been working on the signs with him so he's familiar with them already.

We still don't intentionally turn it on for him, but we have it on in the bg sometimes... like throughout the olympics etc. And my parents have their tv on usually. DS is 15 months. He's not really into it, he does like his ipad time tho. We usually limit that to 20 min a day if at all

Starting at about 7 months we'd let him watch some Wiggles videos on YouTube- just a few songs. At 13.5 months (when baby sister was born LOL) we started turning a show on for him. It's always Curious George or Daniel Tiger and he only watches one show at a time so half an hour max. This happens probably 3-4 times a week now at 17 months.

we started olive when she was 22 months and were headed to the philippines. we couldn't survive the trip if she wasn't into games/tv! it took her a while to get into it... she was more into games than watching videos.

with charlie we started letting him watch short youtube videos around 18 months. he didn't start watching shows until after he was 2.

in an ideal world they would get very little screentime, but life is tiring with two kids and a long winter.

@Crisark: I'd be okay if it was something kid friendly or educational. I guess sports is better than some violent TV show. Plus, I have terrible vision and bad vision is hereditary so I was hoping maybe by delaying TV watching that it'd help in that area too.
