At 4, I'm buying DD1 size 4 (not 4T), or 3/4 (at places like Gymboree) where it's an option...but 4/5 is still too big! I feel like 4s run a little narrower/longer than 4Ts, which is exactly what we need.

However for summer bottoms like shorts/skirts, she's still BARELY a 2T...and there are a few pairs of 12/18 month bottoms still floating around the girls' drawers they can both wear!

DS1 switched over to 5's or XS's at 3. He's really tall and thin though, so we have a hard time with pants. We need the adjustable waist everything.

We are close and I'm not looking forward to it. My son is 4.5 and tall but very skinny so he can fit in 4t shorts but I buy 5t shirts.

I quickly looked at the boys section at Target the other day and I was not impressed.

We're still in the T's at almost 4 years old. For shirts and pants, he's in 4T. PJs are 5T (Carter's). This past weekend, I bought new undies since he's been wearing the same underwear since 2 years old (no joke). I called my mom and asked about 4T versus going XS (size 4). Since it took him so long to get to need the 4T, we're sticking with it. I'd say that we have another year before we're out of the Ts.

@Adira: Oh he will! These growth spurts are no joke. I bought a bunch of summer clothes in early April for C. By the time we were ready to wear them in May she had hit a growth spurt and none of them fit. It's crazy. Fortunately, I hadn't removed a lot of the tags and was able to return them. But there were some that I wasn't so lucky on.

This thread is fascinating to me. I feel like we're never going to get there! Xander (3) is just starting to wear 3T tops. My poor little peanut is never going to grow out of toddler sizes!

@MamaG: The shorts both me and DD too. We usually end up buying extra boy shorts when they go on sale and then maybe spend $1.50 for a cute patch to put on the shorts to 1) distinguish them from DS's shorts and 2) because they're just more fun with a butterfly on it ;)

I would say at 4. I have a big girl (tall and weight) and she still has quite the belly. I'm having to size up in some things to get the shirts to be longer. And she's pretty much given up on shorts. She doesn't like them short. Her summer wardrobe is pretty much dresses (with bike shorts - she doesn't like the cartwheel shorts/too short!) and skorts/scooters. She has soccer today and picked the skort rather than shorts. I told her dresses aren't an option for soccer.

I buy some kid stuff for dd now. She's 3.5 but been in 5t for a few months and xs usually fits her in kids sizes. Depends on what I like in which section.

@regberadaisy: I am too! It's terrifying me. I don't know what we'll do when winter comes and I'm pretty sure I won't have a choice. And I'm with you - both kiddos still sport the Budha belly (as I like to call it). And everything looks like we'll burst a seam. :/

DD1 just turned 4 at the end of April. I've bought some none T sizes here and there but the tops I've gotten are much skinner and she still has the kids belly. :P To be honest, I'm not liking the stuff in the none T section at Old Navy, Target, etc where I do most of my shopping. So I'm dreading the move.

When did you stop buying toddler sizes and move up to the kid section? I ask because we're straddling that line. Both children need 5T for their tops and in some cases for their bottoms (read: diapers are bulky, DD, please potty train). But I know the time is coming perhaps in the next year when we'll be making that leap to youth xs-s.

How old was your LO when you made the switch?
