I am starting to wean R. She is 3.5 months. When she is waking up in the middle of the night to eat, they only way to get back to sleep is to unswaddle her arms. But I tried to get her asleep last night arms out and no luck. Swaddled her and she was out. I am going to try one arm tonight.

I stopped right around 5, but it was a pretty natural process. I probably started at least one arm out by 4 months. Now he's usually in a Sleepsack at night, not always. He doesn't seem to care!

We swaddle weaned when he started flipping onto his tummy to sleep which was 4.5 months. We tried doing a gradual weaning but we ended up just having to go cold turkey because one arm out just confused him. It took a night for him to get used to it but after that it was fine!

Our peds wanted us to stop at 3 months (developmental concerns after that re their bottom half being so tightly wrapped). We switched to swaddle sacks a week before 3 months and used them for 2-3 weeks before leaving her arms out of them.

We stopped a couple of weeks ago at about 3 months. He was getting his arms out to suck on his hands and would get upset that he was getting stuck so it was defeating the purpose. The swaddles were preventing him from soothing himself. Also, he started rolling over and that scared me. I was afraid it was going to be hard but he sleeps much longer now. I guess they know when it is time.

At 5 months, cold turkey. His sleep was so bad at that point it didn't make much of a difference!

my LO is 6 months + 1 week and we're still swaddling :/ She's never once rolled over in her sleep. She does get her arms out sometimes and I leave them out until she wakes up (usually a couple hours later). Her sleep is far from perfect ... but whenever I try to go without a swaddle, it straight up just doesn't happen. I'm convinced I'll send her to college swaddled! Kidding :) kind of .....

@skibobrown: They are fine with it and don't really fight it. I only think their arms get free is because they are so wiggly. They STTN (knock on wood) and I'm worried how swaddle weaning will affect them. I know I'm just prolonging the inevitable.

We swaddled until 6.5 months and only stopped when I night weaned C so I wanted him to be able to find his paci for self-soothing during night wakings.

My daughter clearly disliked the swaddle, so I tried letting her sleep without it at 3.5 months. She had a normal night of sleep the first night out of the swaddle. The second night she completely dropped her night feeding and slept straight through. She STTN from that point onwards (other than wakeups for her pacifier). So for us, early swaddle weaning was key. I think it really depends on what your baby thinks of the swaddle though.

We swaddled until DS was 4.5 months old. He learned how to flip over while swaddled. We quit cold turkey and transitioned using a sleep sack.

My LO's are 5 months and we still swaddle them for naps and nighttime sleep. They are not rolling in their sleep yet so we haven't seen the need to swaddle wean. However they do wiggle their little arms up and out occasionally and wake themselves up. I always heard to wait to swaddle wean until they start rolling since it still helps them sleep so well.

When did you stop swaddling your LO? Any tips?
