Our son is 27 months. We've had numerous gates up (even installed two outdoor gates so he could more safely out on our decks). We don't intend to remove them anytime soon even though he can walk up and down the stairs on his own (with supervision). Sometimes we just want to keep him on a particular floor and don't want him wandering off. But he is starting to climb a lot more and although he's climbed into his crib on his own he hasn't really tried to climb out. That's when we're really going to have a problem! You didn't mention how old your LO is b/t/w... :)

With my daughter we never used gates. With my son, we stopped around 20 months, after we were comfortable with him going up and down the steps on his own. No more gates in the house -- it's great!

Hmm, over the summer I think we stopped using them. Late summer.

LO just learned how to go up and down the stairs a few weeks ago and actually fell down the stairs the other day. We used to keep the gate up only occasionally, but now we keep it up all the time because I'm paranoid she will fall again. The set up we have for our gate isn't the best, and I'm curious when we will be able to ditch it altogether(well until baby #2 starts exploring!)....

When were you able to stop using the baby gate?
