We used the baby tub for a few months but I found it much easier to just get in the tub with her until she was about 10 months old. Since then she's been in the regular tub by herself - I just got a mat to keep her from slipping around too much.

we have a boon collapsible tub

about 3 months I bought a bath sponge for him to lay on because he was way too big for the tub

now that he can sit up pretty well I actually took a plastic laundry basket we have (it has holes on the sides), put the sponge in the bottom and sit him up in it. No sliding around, keeps his toys from getting too far (which he now loves)

@bluestriped bee: we still use a baby tub, it was the fisherprice whale tub with the removable seat that transitions from infant to toddler. LO is 4 now! its so convenient using it though.

I think as soon as she could sit up really reliably, so like 6 months. I was pretty eager to get rid of it since it takes up a lot of space, and also in the big tub there's lots more room for toys.

@stratosphere: Thanks, that's super helpful - I'm going to pick up a testing kit this weekend before we switch our LO out of the infant tub, just in case.

@raspberries: yes, our pediatrician suggested we test our tub because a lot of families in our practice have vintage tubs that have this problem (lead leaching from the glaze) which can lead to elevated lead levels in the babies/kids if they happen to lick the tub or slurp any of the bathwater. Apparently a bit can also be absorbed transdermally but the primary risk is drinking the bathwater or putting wet hands in mouth during bath.

We just got a lead testing kit from the hardware store (it came with several little "sticks" and we tested paint and the tub). Apparently most counties will also send someone to test for you if you have kids and are concerned.

Good luck! I'm so thankful we found this out and were able to prevent our LO getting elevated lead levels.

@stratosphere: I never thought about this, but our tub is original to our house, which was built in the early 1930s - did you just use a lead paint testing kit to find that out?

i think maybe 8 months with charlie then he wanted to stand so we put a nonslip mat in the bathtub. since olive is a second child, i really can't remember when we stopped. but she was physically delayed so i know it was much later than 8 months.

@bluestriped bee: apparently they are held down with suction cups (some of them I guess, I really don't know much about them) and sometimes they can come loose and the seat can slip or tip over.

Although it seems they are dangerous only if you leave your child unattended?

Apparently you can get them with a sling. We used it right from day one and switched her to the sit up side just before she could sit unassisted. She still enjoys it and can splash around pretty safely. We use it in the big tub so she can splash around a lot and not soak the floor.

Still using it at 21 months (though we are using a Karibu, which is pretty big). Our tub is from 1928 and lead testing showed that its porcelain glaze is leaching lead, so until we can get the tub refinished (which itself is a pretty toxic process, which I don't want to be around now that I'm pregnant again) we'll be bathing LO in the plastic tub inside the big tub.

We moved to an inflatable tub around 8 or 9 months. We got the Mommy's Helper one because it had the little saddle to help keep DS propped up and not falling over (unlike the Munchkin duck tub).

@Mrs. Goose: Oh, why are the bath seats dangerous? We don't have one yet. Right now, we do baths in the infant tub separately for the twins. I want to make sure it's safe. I certainly don't want them to slip. If I have to I'll keep bathing them separate until I find a better safer alternative.

We used it for a long time - 8 months maybe? DH does bath time, and he felt like it was a lot easier to get DS clean with infant tub because it lets them lie at an angle. But I imagine with LO2 it'll get used for a much shorter time with the two of them sharing the tub.

I put him in our bathtub with just a little bit of water and he loved being able to scoot around and splash.

We used one until 15 months, but LO is tiny! We now use the inflatable duck tub at 18 months and plan to keep using it for a long time. Our tub is super deep, and it makes it more manageable. She has also never tried to stand up, so things may change when she starts doing that.
