I stopped around 5 months because someone on here posted a thread about white noise being bad for babies' hearing. My husband (a sound engineer and clearly the more scientifically minded of the two of us) completely disagreed with every point the article raised and every "source" cited but I couldn't shake the fear..... so I ditched the white noise!! It didn't seem to make much difference to her to be fair!

My husband is 35 and still uses white noise! I'm not planning on stopping any time soon (it's more helpful for her falling asleep than staying asleep!) but I'm so nervous about what to do for naps when she goes to daycare.

hehe. no but seriously. it's in the hall between the nursery and O's room, so they'll both hear it. I still sleep better with white noise as an adult!

It's the only way to have company over or the TV on without it disturbing my kid's sleep. Plus with baby #2 on the way, it will all the more critical! Plus our sound machine is an air purifier. The fan just produces a whirring noise that happens to double as our sound machine. So really, I probably won't stop anytime soon!

We will use white noise until he tells us he doesn't want to use it anymore. He sleeps fine without it but it's more for us so that we can make as much noise as we want and we don't have to worry about our dog waking him up. In the summer he sleeps with the window open so it helps drown out outside noise too.

still use it because the kids rooms are right next to each other. we keep the doors open in the summer because their rooms don't have ac but the living room ac is strong enough to keep their rooms cool. they are 4 1/2 and almost 3!

We stopped at around 10 months and he was fine. We were using it for naps and nighttime sleep and sometimes we would forget to turn it on and he wouldn't mind. But with another baby on the way we might start using it again since they will be sleeping with us in the same room.

My LO is only 3 months but I have no plans to stop using it. It's the one sleep aid we have that I don't think matters if it lasts through adulthood. When he was still in our room, I really liked sleeping with white noise. We keep it fairly low, though.

@mrs green grass: I'm pretty sure, if we are speaking about the same research, that the study measured the decibels of popular sound machines and found that many of them could reach a level that would damage hearing. So if you're using the top volume right next to the baby, it could be bad, but the study didn't actually show that it definitely IS bad.

I read somewhere that a safe level is about the noise level of someone taking a shower, so I aim for a lower than that and keep it in the room but not right next to the baby.

We still use ours at 18 months but I try to keep it as low as will work.

There was an article recently about potential negative affects either for hearing or attention...can't remember which and too lazy to look right now!

Same as PPs! He doesn't need it to fall asleep and has slept fine without it with no hindrance to his normal sleep schedule. But it's the noise-cancelling factor that we aren't ready to part with! Esp with plans to TTC#2 in the coming months!

J is 28 months and we have no plans to stop. We initially started only because we moved to a smaller apartment and the noise helps cancel out all other apartment noise and enables us to do things around the house without waking him up... He's become fairly dependent on it though. The second I turn it off, he springs awake. I'm not sure how I feel about him being dependent on it? But he sleeps so well with little interruption so I can't complain.
