I did it for about 12 weeks during the day to make sure she was tanked up. But my kid went down for a nap relatively easily so I didn't worry about waking her.

LO's doctor said to stop waking her when she regained her birthweight. I don't recall exactly but she was definitely less than two weeks old.

@MamaCate: My ped is ridiculously entertained by his weight gain because big brother is almost never on the growth charts from being so small (he was until 6-ish months, when she said "genetics kicked in." I was off the charts small as well. Now little brother is in the 96th percentile. These kids...

Thanks everyone! This baby is so much sleepier than LO1 who I never had to walk so I feel like I am in uncharted territory!

@Jess1483: Wow great weight gain! We only have two night wakings so I can live with that for now.

@ldh112: That is very helpful--thank you! I am going to my BF support group tomorrow and planning to do a weighted feed then and will talk to them about timing and waking too. We aim for 7-8 feeds a day but have been getting 7 mostly. I did 9 until he got back to birth weight.

@getjazzy: that is great! I woke him up at night too for the first three weeks because it took that long to get back to birth weight and to get things sorted out. He has gone as long as six hours now that I stopped though.

@MamaCate: J is 9 months now and I'm sure going more than 4 hours during the day would be ok, but we're so set in our schedule by now that's sort of a non-issue.

With this baby I haven't had to wake much because she eats constantly (2 weeks old) but if she gets to 4 hours or so of a daytime gap, I wake her to prevent her from wanting to catch up at night. At night, I stopped waking to feed around... 5-6 days old. She goes to 5 hours occasionally but mostly sticks around the 3-4 hour mark between. She gained nearly a whole pound in her first 6 days so I figured she was good haha.

@MamaCate : my baby is 8 weeks- I supplement some myself (weight issues until about 6 weeks) and am feeding her every 2-3 hours, averaging closer to 2-2.5. I wake her from naps if necessary so I can make sure she gets enough feeds in since she is beginning to sleep in longer stretches at night. I still worry about her daily intake after all we've been through but she is gaining well and I don't want to mess with what is working. If you want them to sleep more at night, we were told to keep up with the 2-3 hour feeds during the day, per the pediatrician. It was at around 6 weeks she began her longer sleep cycles at night.

ETA: what has really helped is trying to keep up with what she needs based on her weight range and scheduling feeds accordingly. We feed about 7-9 times a day currently. I check in with an LC every couple weeks to do weighted feeds and re-evaluate how much to be supplementing based on her weight.

I'm waking for feeds at 10 weeks. He has nearly doubled birthweight, but still wakes at night 1-2 times, so still eating every 3 hours during the day.

@MamaCate: I was VERY lucky. Both mine started doing those longer stretches around 11 weeks. But they were also both firmly cat nappers, so it was pretty rare that they would sleep so long that I'd feel compelled to wake them anyway. But I think when they got their 4 month shots, they slept a lot after that, and I just let them, so definitely by then, I felt comfortable enough not to wake them.

@MrsF: thanks--glad I am not alone! We had weight gain issues at first and I couldn't tell if I was being paranoid or practical!

@Adira: thanks! do you remember how old yours were at that point? We do have a longer stretch at night but more like 5 hours which is pretty good for now.

I think once they firmly were sleeping 7-8 hours at night, I stopped waking them during the day to eat. Though sometimes if my LO naps long, I'll just try squeezing in an early extra feed during the day just to be on the safe side (like two within 1.5 hours right before bed or something).

LO is now 6 1/2 weeks old. We have had our share of feeding challenges but he is now primarily nursing and seems to be gaining well. i plan for about 3 hours between feeds but just had to wake him up at nearly 4 hours for his second feed of the day. He is clearly hungry now but I am wondering when it is time to let him totally decide?
