It was when her doctor said I no longer needed to... that she would tell me when she was hungry, which I think is most important (when lo's doctor says...) I continued to wake him to eat every three hours during the day. He is EBF and has always had great weight gain. She was sleeping 5+ hours at night in the hospital and they told me to wake her ever 3. Since she was nursing a lot when she was awake I decided not to wake her. She was back up to her birth weight in less than 2 weeks and has been gaining well ever since. She is a very sleepy newborn. At the hospital they said to wake her every 3-4 hours during the day to feed, but let her sleep at night. This is in total contrast to having my DS in the US where they said he needed to eat every 3 hours around the clock! DD now wakes up on her own when she is hungry. They both didn't have trouble falling asleep after I nursed them. I woke them up b/c I didn't want to pump. It took less time to wake them, change a diaper, and nurse than to pump for me. She started sleeping through at 8wks and I heard it was fine not to wake her...but then she started to lose weight. At her appt last week the dr recommended still waking her up at least every 4 hours at night to eat. I feel like she will wake up when she is hungry but part of me feels like I should still make sure to get her up to make sure she is getting enough food. I don't think she would wait much longer than 4 hours or do more than one longer stretch at night. Did you wake your newborn to eat at night?
