We took L&D class at 34 weeks and then infant CPR at a day before 39 weeks and before my water broke.

I took it in the last six weeks postpartum, but we were the second couple due in our Lamaze class (the first was new to the area) and the first due in the infant care class and I think first due in the breastfeeding class.

@Foodnerd81: You should definitely take the class about birth! I meant more if you're going to do some research on your own, maybe focus on postpartum stuff. For example, I hear such great things about Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, but I find the author's writing style is really disorganized and once LO was here I was so tired that I just could not get through it - I wish I had read it while I was pregnant.

Also, I'm sure it's different at different places, but my preparation for birth class was not at all specific to my hospital even though it was held there. Can you do a hospital tour? I had to schedule that separately, but it was SO useful and informative about what to expect at that particular facility during labor and delivery.

@aprk: That's what I thought, about DH coming with to the BF class. I don't really trust myself to remember a lot of things when I've just given birth and haven't slept in days. Hopefully he will remember better... having not actually pushed a baby out or had one surgically removed!

@Foodnerd81: I felt that the hospital tour and my regular appointments with the midwives gave me enough details, but I hope you find something that works for you! As for BF class, my husband came and I think it was beneficial. The lactation consultants recommended it so he knows what to expect and how he can help.

Oh bonus question-- what classes did your SO come to and what did you do on your own? DH was questioning if he needs to go to a BFing class, which honestly, I don't know!

@Giraffe: I have read that a lot (better to prepare for life with a newborn than one day of labor and delivery)! Definitely taking it to heart, but I do want to make sure to take a class about birth too. They also offer a "happiest baby on the block" class at my hospital that I may take.

@aprk: I'm sure there are plenty of non hospital classes I could take, but this one I sort of want to do at the specific hospital, since it will be so specific to these midwives and these birthing rooms or whatever. Or... maybe I'm totally wrong! The other classes, like breastfeeding, newborn care, first aid, I care less about where I take.

My baby is due at the end of July and we have 5 weeks worth of classes starting at the beginning July. Yeah.....! I was warned that the NHS classes booked up quickly but it was ridiculous - that was the soonest they could get us in and we booked when I was 12 weeks! Eck! I'm seeing my LC a month before the baby is due.

I was due at the end of July last year and we did a five-week preparation for birth class, two hours per week, starting in late May. It was good timing for us because of my husband's work schedule, and I also felt like it was close enough to my due date that we didn't forget everything, but not scarily close.

Before the class started I did lots of reading on my own to satisfy my over-preparation urges :) I will say, though, I wish I had learned more about newborn care, especially sleep, before LO was born, and spent less time learning about pregnancy and the birthing process.

I didn't. We hired a doula and skipped all classes. We did do a hospital tour at 37 weeks.

We did our birthing class from week 29-35 (or somewhere around there ... it was six weeks of 1.5 hour sessions, I'm too lazy to do the exact math). It was the perfect time for us because we were able to take in all the information without being so close to the due date and overwhelmed.

Are there any non-hospital classes that might for your time frame?

At what point in your pregnancy did you take you child birth class, breast feeding class, etc? How did you decide which ones to take?

My hospital offers 'Preparing for Childbirth with a Midwife' (I see a midwife practice and they will deliver unless there is a problem). I'm due at the end of July, and DH has a huge exam the first weekend of June, so pretty much we are looking at trying to do any prep classes between that time. Right now the only one on the hospital's schedule is the weekend my sister was going to have my shower, 4 hours away, though we could change the shower to later (getting closer to my due date, though). They will likely add more classes to the schedule, but I'm not sure. Just sort of wondering when is too late for these things, or if you got to a certain point where you were freaking out by not feeling prepared, or if you felt you did it too early and forgot stuff...

Or, maybe I am over thinking, but as probably a lot of people on here to, I like to be prepared, even if I'm over-prepared!
