@Andrea: @banana: @sorrycharlie: I know. I've been sad about the dog too. She was never spayed and was older when she got knocked up by a neighborhood dog. She just couldn't handle pregnancy and childbirth. :-(

It was a sensitivity thing...

Something came up and my friend and her son didn't go to the party. I asked around and the son is aware that his mom is pregnant but he isn't taking it well. A few months ago, his grandma's Labrador had complications during labor and died a few days after giving birth to a litter of stillborn puppies. The son was very attached to the dog since his Grandma is his primary daycare provider. His parents are trying to assure him that nothing like that will happen to mommy but he isn't taking it well! So sad! Hope everything works out. I feel like a jerk for thinking she was a bit weird for waiting so long!

As a PP said, it could also be a sensitivity thing rather than a he-doesn't-know-yet thing. Maybe the four-year-old isn't handling it well. Or, maybe the parents are afraid that all people will talk about is the baby and she wants to keep the focus on the birthday boy.

@jholler25: I'll report back when I see her! She is 5'11" and runs a lot but she must have a little belly at least?

Yeah she has to be showing! I'm due after her, in Dec., and I need a "Wide Load" sign on my stomach!!! I think my chihuahua's even figured out something's going on by now!

We started talking to Lala at 13 months when we decided to have another baby, but we really ramped it up at the time we were matched. I think adoption is even more confusing because there are no visual cues of the changes about to come!

I think DD caught on before we even officially told her. She would hear snippets of my conversations with DH and figured it out. I officially told her after the gender scan. I think telling her that she was going to have a sister was better than "brother or sister". So ever since then, she has been talking about her little sister who is coming soon.

We talked about it right away because the boys had to stop wrestling with me. It started out with just oh mommy can wrestle right now and when I started showing (pretty early at like 12 or 13 weeks) we started talking about the baby in my tummy. We showed the boys their books and pictures of when I was pregnant with the twins. Then they got really excited.

I told my then 2.5 yo when I started *really* showing. But I also didn't remind her about it too much, especially in the early or even middle stages of pregnancy. I did talk to her more about it in the 3rd tri to prep her for the big change.

Wow that seems late? DD was only 14 months when I got pregnant with DS but we pretty much started telling her to be gentle with mommy's belly, there's a baby in there, etc...

I was 8 weeks when we talked to DS. I had morning sickness and DS would cry every time I got sick so I told him it was a good thing and after all of it was gone, he'd have a new baby sister or brother to cuddle and play with.

I couldn't imagine waiting that long! I think talking about the baby is important but maybe it's a sensitive subject in their family?

Toddler Girl was 23 months old when I had Wonder Baby, so she was only 14 months old when I conceived. We talked lots about babies and the baby in my belly but who knows if she had any idea what I was talking about! She figured it out when the baby came....

Long story short, I have no idea how I would handle it with a kid who's 4, but she's going to have to tell him sooner or later.

HAHA. I'm due late December and I'm huge. A lot of it is fat though, so maybe she's not showing? :P

I'm going to see one of my friends tomorrow at another friend's LO's birthday party. She sent a group text to people who are going to the party and asked us not to mention her pregnancy or baby to her almost 4 year old son. She is due in late Nov and I assume she is showing...is that normal to wait so long to tell a toddler aged LO?
