Congrats! We have a 3.5 year old and a 2 year old and are expecting our third. We waited until our anatomy scan at 19 weeks to tell them...wanted to make sure baby was completely healthy before breaking the news. Our 2 year old doesn't really get it but our 3.5 year old does and it's awesome when he wants to do things like feel the baby move or makes plans for what he'll do with the new baby once it's here.

Wow, congrats! So exciting for your family! :)

I think our kids have a similar age difference, and with my older DD, we started talking about "the baby" as soon as we had come out publicly (around 11 weeks). She was only 15/16 months, but we didn't want her to accidentally mention something about the baby before we were comfortable telling the news to everyone (she used to rest her hands on my tummy and call it "baby," or she'd stroke it and say "gentle, baby"). I think, at 3 , your DD should have a pretty good understanding of what you tell her right away, but since kids are terrible at keeping secrets, I wouldn't officially tell her until you're ready for the world to know.

DS is 2, and we probably told him around 12 weeks, but he totally doesn't get it. He knows the answer to the question "What is in Mommy's tummy?" is "New Baby," but he has zero conception of what that actually means. He also doesn't really talk about it unless prompted, and is pretty much totally uninterested. Around the 6 month mark we'll probably start reading him books about little brothers and babies and such, and talking about it. Two of his best daycare friends are getting younger siblings two months before he will be (assuming we all stick more or less to our due dates), so I think that will also help, if we meet those kids and explain that "this baby is so-and-so's little brother, soon you will also have one."

Congratulations! I don't have any experience in this but I'll be interested to read other bee's suggestions since we will eventually have a #3. By the time we have #3, DS will probably be closer to three and DD will be closer to 2, so we'll have to have the same talk. I refuse to wait longer than DS being 3 or 4 though, having siblings 5 years older then you can be really rough - I know! I'm a #3 and my siblings are five and six years older than me!

We waited until we had a good NT scan at 12 weeks. I had a MC my third pregnancy so we wanted to make sure it was a sticky one before we told them.

My oldest was 10 though, that is why we told then. She had noticed I had been sick a lot. With my second we waited until I was almost showing since she was younger and couldn't really grasp everything.

We found out this weekend that I'm expecting our third baby (and last, which makes me sad). DS is only 14 months so he doesn't care or understand, but DD turned 3 in March and she will totally get it. So, when do we tell her? When did you tell your other LOs?
