I wouldn't worry about speeding it up; as long as your giving him a lot of opportunities to hang out on the ground, he'll do it when he's ready!

For him to do it all by himself was right around 10 months, from there everything else happened one right after another. Amazing how quick they go from squirming around to being mobile, independent creatures!

Only just recently probably just a little after we hit 9 months. He is just now beginning to figure out crawling so once he figured out how to get up on all fours from being on his tummy he could maneuver getting himself back to sit.

m has been sitting for a while, but like you, it's because I would sit him and he would stay that way. However, starting now at 7 months, I will place him on his belly at times, turn around, and find him sitting! He's not a pro yet, but he knows how to do it on his own.

8 months and 1 week.

Something we did with my LO was backward chaining. Every time he was lying down (either on his back or tummy), we would flip him to his tummy then help him get on all fours then guide him into a seated position and encourage him to do the last step (push himself upright). You can then encourage your LO to do more and more 'steps' to sit up by himself.

10 months! he started crawling confidently at 7 months, but showed zero interest at getting himself into sitting position until 10 months. I didn't do anything to help him figure it out, I just let him work it out on his own :)

LO started doing this last week at 7.5 months. Once they get up on all fours it won't be long. She still doesn't crawl properly (mostly army crawls) but can sit herself up like a pro!

@Silva: Oh, haha, I never knew that! I thought when people said "pull to sit" they were referring to the baby actually pushing themselves up themselves, despite the name! Thanks for the clarification!

@maybebaby: No worries - I thought you were asking what you meant to be asking, even if the wording was wrong! :)

I think LO was 8 or 9 months when he actually got from all fours to a seated position. As long as he can sit on his own with minimal support at 6 months, I think you're good. If you have him in a lying position and pull him up, his head should stay parallel to his body. If his head tips back, it might be something to bring up to your pediatrician.

I'm not sure I know many 6 month olds that can get into a seated position on their own by 6 months!

oh- do you mean how they describe the milestone "pulling to sit"? That just means that YOU pull them to sit and they can stay there.
That had me confused for awhile, too.

Xander has JUST figured this out at 9.5 months! He started doing it last week, so he's a little over 9 months.

Xander's also JUST learning to crawl. He couldn't sit up until he could get up into the crawling position, and then he can push himself into the sitting position. But he's still working on crawling - he currently can only go a few steps before falling.

And as far as I know, they're not really "pulling" to sit. Xander's pushing himself to sitting from all fours. So now he can go from laying down, up to all fours, and then to sitting up. And he's been sitting up well since 6 months, so it's taken him a while to get here!

I heard someone say this is harder than crawling to do. I think they usually crawl first, and then they learn how to kind of push themselves back into a seated position?
My LO is 7.5 months. She has been able to sit well for 2 months. Occasionally, particularly during naked time, she kind of pushes herself back into a seated position with her legs in a "z" (does that make sense?) but rarely does it.
She is learning to go from sit to crawl position right now (and still working on mastering crawling).
