Even when we sleep-trained Claire at 4.5 months, she would still wake up 2-3x per night to eat (which we read is perfectly normal for that age). The only difference was that she would go right back to sleep after a feeding and a diaper change.

The very first time that she slept a full night was the day after she turned 6 months old. But that was a fluke, and she returned to waking up 1-2x a night.

She only began to regularly sleep 10-12 hours through the night without waking us (because most babies do not actually sleep the entire 10-12 hours straight, but will go back to sleep by themselves) was at about 9 months. But even so, she still wakes up once about 20% of the time.

Mavi started sleeping 7-8 hours stretches at 6 weeks. Then at 8 weeks he went to 10 hours. The JOY!!!! But then there was the wakeful period at 3,5 months up until 4 months when we sleep trained him.

Our little one started sleeping through the night at 2 1/2 months. The minute we stopped swaddling her, she found her thumb, and that was it. 12 hour nights right away.

I have a feeling we're very lucky and spoiled, and we're in for a suprise when baby number 2 comes around :)

I started a routine from the day we came home from the hospital...well as much a routine as possible. The one thing we have kept consistent is that LO goes to bed between 8 and 9pm. She is currently 7 weeks old, and I think we are slowly getting to the point of sleeping through the night. We now only wake 1X per night, and this past week we have been slowly lengthening that first stint of sleep. We were doing consistently 4 hours, and this week it started out with 4 hours, then 5 hours, then 6 hours, and last night it was 6 hours and 45 minutes! So I think we are getting there :) I can't wait to wake up and look at that clock and see 6am or something like that! I was amazed last night when I woke up at 3:15!

@Lozza: Our routine is from 30-40 minutes. Bath at 6:30pm followed by nighttime diaper and lotion massage, nasal irrigation (poor baby has terrible environmental allergies), PJs and sleepsack, read 1-3 books depending on his mood, and nurse to drowsy. He is down between 7 and 7:10pm.

Charlie's routine has been the same since we sleep trained. It starts at 7pm bath, sleep sack, bottle, into crib drowsy but awake by 7:30pm with white noise on.

@Lozza- Eli is 12 weeks right now, we started the routine when he was just 5 weeks old. The routine consists of a bath, bedtime bottle, swaddle, white noise, a song, and then we place him in his crib drowsy so he falls asleep on his own. He has been sleeping long stretches of time since 6 weeks old!

As of timing.. every baby/kid is different but we notice that he goes down easiest around 6pm (before daylight savings it was 7pm) and within an hour after he wakes up from his last nap... so timing is important. The whole routine takes about 30 minutes... 10 min bath, 15 - 20 min feeding and burping, then 5 min for swaddle and a song

I think she started at about 6 months. Every once in a while she'll wake up a few times.. esp during growth spurts.

@Lozza - My routine takes half an hour. It starts with a bath. Then we go to her room where she has water (was previously milk but she stopped wanting bedtime milk at 15 months), I read her some stories, and we have cuddle time. Once it hits bedtime (hers is 6:45 pm), I zip her up in a sleep sack, put her in the crib, and she is down for the count. We have been doing this same routine since she was about 2 weeks old I think.

DS is 7.5 months old and has never slept more than 6 hours at a time, and even that has only happened a handful of times. We tried Ferber for a while, and it seemed to work well for about a week, but then I think he hit a growth spurt and everything fell apart.
I think we need to do a better job of having a routine... for those of you who have gotten into a consistent bedtime routine with your kids, and find it to help, what is your routine and how long does it take?

My husband and I loosely followed the Ferber method, and we went months being defeated by our LO. We didn't set a consistent bedtime routine for him, and I think that is what hurt him the most. Now at 6.5 months we have our routine set, and the LO passes out without a peep with only one middle of the night feeding. Phew. I was also so certain that he needed to wake up 3-4 times in the middle of the night to eat.

I wish I had sleep trained consistently from the beginning. Better late than never.

@tisty1982 - we used the ferber method of crying it out to sleep train. charlie went from being up for hours in the middle of the night and/or waking up every hour to sleeping thru the night post sleep training.

i've written several posts on it -- just go to the blog and search for sleep training if you're interested in learning more. but it's something you won't have to worry about for a little while... you can't sleep train until your baby is a little older. :)

Okay - so this is a stupid question I'm sure - but what do you mean when you say "sleep train"? I've heard this in a few different threads and not sure exactly what people are talking about!

I have so much to learn before our baby comes in a few weeks!!

My son is 9 months old and he's only slept through the night about 6 times. It is a work in progress for us. We sleep trained about 3 months ago and it is improved, but teething is wreaking havoc on sleep.

Eli just started sleeping through the night consistently... He turned 12 weeks on Sunday... before that though, he would sleep through the night every other day or so for about a week. His bedtime has always been around 7pm since week 8 (6pm now after daylight savings) We just noticed that his wake time would slowly go from 2am... to 3am... to 4 am... 5 am... finally to 5:30 - 6:30 nowadays.

Sleeping through the night is the holy grail of parenting. Charlie didn't start sleeping through the night until 4 1/2 months when we sleep trained. He was a horrible sleeper until then.

I'm really hoping that Olive sleeps through the night on her own because I don't want to sleep train her. Right now she wakes up every 3-4 hours like clockwork, but her adjusted age is only 4 days.
