I wanna say about 9 months. By 10 months I felt comfortable giving her bigger pieces.

@rahlyrah: Don't be nervous! Google gagging vs. choking so you get a visual. Gagging is good - it means he's learning how to navigate food in his mouth! And lady, you're staying at home now, you need to get out and meet some local moms :)

@scg00387: What she said :)

Bigger chunks will be more likely to lead to chewing...it will also help him be better able to manage pieces of food. Believe it or not, when they first start solids, they are more likely to choke on small pieces as they're more difficult to manage and therefore can slip down their throat, whereas they have more control over larger pieces.

As for your question, I would say by 6.5-7 mos...we started BLW at 5.5 mos.

@rahlyrah: he is more likely to choke if you give him chunks instead of letting him learn how to bite IMO. My LO chewed/gummed from the start otherwise we didn't get anything off :) try banana or avocado or bread strips!

@rahlyrah: I went back and looked and the beginning of November is when she started eating Bananas. They were in long spears so I guess she was chewing then cause she had to but off pieces. That was right before she turned 8 months.

S started gumming on bananas like two weeks ago...so she was about 7.5 months old. It was kind of a shock when she did it because until that point, she had just either swallowed pieces whole or spit them right out!

I'm trying to get LO to eat more solids and he is very much disinterested in the idea. Usually, he makes a horrified face and spits it out. Today, I was able to get him to eat some mango, kiwi, and strawberry but he just swallowed them whole. He doesn't try to chew or gum anything I put in his mouth. Is this normal? I'm scared to give him larger chunks (BLW style) because I think he will choke.
