@Vegmama: Thanks for the info!

At 8 weeks, LO is maybe just starting to show signs of being interested in faces. She will smile back when you smile at her and while she doesn't seem "captivated" by faces at all, she does at least look at them now lol.

We saw our pediatrician yesterday, and I asked about this.

Specifically, we were asking about the fact that our LO still doesn't laugh much. It reminded me to ask about the eye-contact thing.

Our doctor said it's totally normal. That babies don't need to learn as much as communication that early (aside from crying, etc.), and that when they are developmentally ready to soak up all of the facial expressions, etc. that they'll need, they'll start studying like crazy. Until then, the house is much more interesting, because of all of the colors, lines, shapes. Thought I'd pass that on!

So so normal! At our 4 week appt our pediatrician told us not to be alarmed when she didn't seem to see us for a few more weeks. It wasn't until 8ish weeks when she started to look at us. She is 5 months old now and has just discovered our faces with her hands! :happy:

Not exactly the same...but I remember being worried about LO avoiding eye contact when she was around 6-7 weeks old. She soon grew out of it and a few weeks later was fine with it :)

I would talk to your pediatrician ... Either way, it would be nice to have a range of "ideal" milestones for baby to be meeting. At this point, I am nearly certain that no doctor would be concerned, but it's worth noting for later, to follow-up, and have it noted.

Our daughter did eye contact early, even would smile a lot around 6 weeks, BUT she still very rarely laughs. Like, maybe once a week (at 9 months old). It totally freaked me out, because all of the baby books said she should laugh around 3 months), but our doctor explained that babies are so SO different, and that since she was meeting her other milestones, we're good.

And, looking back through my blog posts from that time, I am seeing photos that are reminding me that while she did make eye contact, she was VERY interested in her surroundings. She loved looking at the ceiling vents, and places in the house with a lot of contrast. She liked looking at my husband way more than looking at me, and I just figured I was boring! ;)

@pui: when my baby was 6 weeks old, he loved to look at shadows, the ceiling fan, pretty much everything but my or anyone else's face. I was literally freaking out, worrying about autism. Eventually (around 7 weeks) we noticed the eye contact increasing and being sustained for longer periods.

I don't remember exactly when but I think it was around 6 or 7 weeks and usually only during diaper changes. Now (10 weeks) he'll react more to us in other situations/places but still sometimes looks away or ignore me when I try to engage him, probably bc I'm annoying him haha.

DD is nearly 6 weeks old and never looks at anyone in the face. When held close to my face (while I smile, talk and sing to her) she looks around the room and ignores me. Even if she looks in someone's general direction, it seems like she's looking "through" them and not really at them.

I can definitely see her getting interested in other things. She'll look at her mobile and herself in the mirror for 15 minutes or more, but faces do not seem to interest her at all.

Is this normal? I thought babies were supposed to like looking at faces?
