I don't know how helpful this, since our LO is much younger, but we just weaned her off the paci for nights only at 5 months. She was waking up over and over again at night looking for it and it was driving us nuts. We took it away cold turkey and used the Ferber method. It took 2 nights for her to get used to sleeping without it and now she doesn't seem to even miss it. We subbed in a soft lovey and that seemed to help.

DS is 16 months and only gets his wubbanub for naps and night time sleep. He is fine at daycare so I think we just will go cold turkey one day. I think we'll wait until May as DH and I are going to Mexico for my brother's wedding at the end of April so I don't want to rock the boat until after we're gone for the sake of my saintly best friend who will be watching him during that time. I hope it won't be an issue.

@Adira: that's such a cute/ great idea!

I don't have any personal experience with this because LO went cold turkey voluntarily at 6 months.

I have heard slowly cutting bits of it off until it's "broken" and doing a ceremony to sent it to its happy resting place!

My son was 10 months but it turned out to be a curse because now I am his pacifier. Might be easier when he is bottle and breast weaned. If he already is then maybe try poking holes in them. I've heard that or a sour taste like lemon juice can work. May not be tear free though.

We're in the thick of this now. Dd is 15 months, and we took them away cold turkey last Friday (so about ten days ago). She'd only had them in her crib, and her night sleep has been largely unaffected. Her naps on the other hand have been TERRIBLE. We're STILL fighting her to sleep, and she's clearly exhausted. No advice, only empathy.

@kml636: We just stopped one day and she cried a bit but not as much as we thought. She's doing great now, it only took 4-5 days for any crying to stop and she's about three to four weeks out from when we first took it.

@BelugaBean: My LO is 15 months and her daycare provider seemed to think it was affecting her teeth. She also seems to be prone to ear infections, so we wanted to get rid of it. We decided to go cold turkey. Not going to lie, it is horrible. How did it go for you?

Here is our experience and I think we lucked out! Our doc suggested getting rid of it at one.

DS had 3 wubbanubs he loved. When he turned one, we decided that as they disappeared that would be it. By about 14-15 months, he was down to one. He ended up getting a stuffy nose and was cutting about 4 teeth at the same time. He couldn't really suck on it because then he couldn't breathe. I noticed he started falling asleep without it, so after about 2 days I stopped offering. He adapted pretty quickly and didn't really ask for it. I was surprised it was so easy. He has never been an awesome sleeper so I didn't really notice a difference there.

I would look for times there were less interested in it or maybe try not offering and see what happens?

My brother and SIL waited until my niece was 3. They just quit cold turkey and she was ok with it. M

Each kid is so different!

@BabyBoecksMom: Oh, that's really good advice on removing it at naps first. His security item at daycare is whatever blanket they have there. I don't think that I sent him to daycare with a lovey since he's been there. I sent baby keys that eventually became community property. I still see those with the kids when I drop him off in the morning.

My kids were older - 2.5

My dentist told me to put holes in them and it worked for BOTH kids!

I started with a small hole so they could still suck a little and then the next night I made it bigger - they were old enough to understand that it was "broke" and that was that!

@cascademom: Yes, she had a paci at daycare... it was her security item. If your son hasn't had it at daycare, then I would start with removing it from naps... or whatever he uses it for least (except for the times when he needs it to calm down from the super emotional breakdowns)

ETA: it seemed like the less she had it, the easier it was to take it away from the next thing.

@BabyBoecksMom: Did she take a paci at daycare for naps? LO hasn't had a paci at daycare since he was tiny. He only gets it at home for naps, bedtime, and car time if he's ornery or tired. I'm so nervous about weaning him of it.

I had to do this.... and then we actually had to give it back to her.

We did it around 21 months. We started by talking to her and letting her know what we were going to do. She used to get it in the car, naps and bedtime. We took away the car first, and kept her distracted with music and snacks.

Night time was the hardest. We talked to her about how she was a big girl and she didn't need the paci anymore. We held her every night (something we never had to do), and there were definitely tears, but after about a week, she went down with less problems. However, she did start waking once or twice a night and need us to go in there and pat her back to sleep.

Nap times were the last thing we did because she was going to daycare and there were so many distractions. The ladies there were fantastic and really worked with us on getting her to drop it for nap times.

We had to give it back to her after a few months due to some anxiety issues, so we'll go through this whole thing all over again later. It really sucks because she was better about not needing it before we took it away, than she is now. So my best advice is to do it when you feel it's right.

Following. Our doctor told us a few months ago to wean him of it because it gets harder as he gets older. LO gives it to us when he's done napping or sleeping. I'm worried for his sleep too. He's been a great sleeper with sleep training and paci.

I don't have any personal experience with this, but I can tell you what my BFF did with her daughter which seemed to work well (although her daughter was older so...). But basically she talked to her daughter a bunch about how she was a big girl and didn't need a pacifier anymore, and then she had her LO pick out her favorite pacifier and they went to Build-a-Bear and they made a bear and put the pacifier inside the bear and then her LO could have "Paci-Bear" for naps and at night instead. It worked well, but then again, her daughter was older than 18 months.

Good luck to you! <3

So I know LO's doctor wants her to stop using her pacifier (she's currently 18 months old). She already only really has it when she sleeps and when she's in high stress situations but is completely addicted at night/during naps.

I almost feel bad for taking it away because this is her coping mechanism. But I know it's not good for her language or teeth.

I'm also torn on how to do it. She currently has three pacifiers but when we got home from her appointment today, I took one away. So, now she's at two pacifiers and tomorrow I'll probably knock it down to one for a few days. I also plan to introduce a stuffed animal to her crib to see if she'll become attached to that.

The doctor said that some people swear by poking a hole in the pacifier, while some go cold turkey, and others wait until they're older (which he doesn't recommend).

So what did you do and when? We were just going to go cold turkey but I'm nervous because her sleep has been AMAZING lately. How long did it take for your LO to get used to it?
