DD is 27 months and she always gets out from underneath the blanket and sleeps on top of it. So, not yet I guess.

my son was in a sleep sack the entire time he was in a crib, till he was 2.75... I think by 3/3.5 he was better about keeping the blanket on himself...

This may not work for you if he's refusing a sleep sack or being covered up, but I wrap my LO in an A&A muslin blanket, like, really tightly under her armpits, so the blanket is snug around her body and hips, and looser around her legs. Her arms are free and she can get her legs free if she needs to, but the blanket usually stays on her for most of the night unless she stands up in the crib. I started doing it to cut down on the crazy-legs around the time she started walking, but she seems to kind of like it for sleeping now.

My LO (2.5) needs to be really warm to sleep too, she's best at about 75 degrees with a sleep sack, long sleeved pjs and a blanket! (totally freaks DH out, since he likes to sleep cold!). We've had great luck with the sleep sacks with feet openings (I have a Halo one) and layering. I've often added a long sleeved onesie under the pjs, which seems to work really well.

@mrslonghorn it's a problem because my husband and I are roasting when the temp is 78 all night. If it's lower, my son starts rolling around and whining/crying because he's cold and the air is blowing on him.

We're going to try to find a way to block off part of the air vent in his room, but we have those weird circular vents in the ceiling and they're not quite flat.

I think it's very child dependent. My older kid is almost 6 and is very restless and doesn't stay covered. She can cover back up and has been able to since about 4. On the other hand, my 2.5 year old is not nearly as restless and stays fairly covered and will cover herself again.

Have you considered one of those blankets that attaches the sheets so that it stays in place? I've never personally tried them since my DS happily slept in his sleep sack until he was almost 3 but I remember hearing about them. Some examples:

(1) https://beddys.com/pages/what-are-beddys-bed-sets

maybe I'm reading this wrong, but I don't see why he needs a blanket.... If you keep the house at 78, and he is already warm-natured, why not just let him sleep in his pajamas as-is? Or in warmer pajamas without a blanket? If he doesn't need it as a lovey or to keep him warm, it doesn't sound like he has to have a blanket at all..

If/when our boys get colder at night, they just sorta lay on top of the fuzzy blanket on their bellies with their legs and arms tucked underneath them with their butts in the air. DS2 is 14 months and manages to pull it across him when he wants to. DS1 is almost 3 and mostly wants it tucked in around him when we put him to bed but then immediately kicks all the covers off and wads them into a ball once we leave. So we just keep lots of smaller fuzzy blankets and stuffed animals and what not in his bed so he can easily grab something to snuggle up against and warm up with.

@mrspickle he's generally HOT natured, which makes it even weirder! He sleeps in cotton long sleeve and long pant PJs with socks. I have thought about trying fleece but it seems like too much, I worry about him overheating.

@looch that's a good idea about the sleep sacks with feet! I don't know if he would tolerate that or not, but maybe worth a try.

@jennibenni wow! We keep our ac at 76 and that wakes him up. I have to set it at 78!!! for him to stay asleep.

@shootingstar temp is usually set at 76 but have to turn it up to 78 for him to stay asleep. Which is really stuffy at night. It is hot enough where we are that even at 76 it blows a lot during the night and stays pretty cool. I can't close the vents in his room.

@gingerbebe that's a good idea.

@mrs. microscope he sleeps with 2 A&A muslin blankets but usually has them wadded up under him while he holds the corners or something. Not to cover up. I try to cover him up with it when I put him in the crib and he says "NO!". Sigh. I think I'll try adding a warmer blanket and maybe he will use it, although I have a feeling it will just be wadded up/cuddled with.

DD is 21 months old and likes her legs and feet covered while she falls asleep. She's good at pulling the blanket off and on when she wants. She mostly keeps it off. Our AC is at 73 at night. We're in TX so I completely understand it getting hot at night! This is pretty recent though. She got interested in the blanket in the past month. Could you experiment with different types of pjs? Is he generally cold natured?

Mine was in a sleep sack until 19 months in a crib and then we switched her to a big bed with a duvet. She is only nearly 21 months now and I think she is figuring out the blanket thing in the last day or two, but only when she is awake and falling asleep. Lately we haven't had our ac on and I compulsively check the night temperature to try and figure out how to dress her so she won't wake up from being too cool.

P uses an Aden + Anais muslin blanket for her upper half, and a fuzzy loose knit blanket for her bottom. Usually the A+A ends up over her head (pnp, no bars on the crib like that poor family tragedy the other week!). She usually throws them both out sometime early morning, then will get cold and pull up her fitted sheet and snuggle under that if she gets cold. We keep our A/C at 74.

It wasn't until he was maybe 3. What temp are you setting it at? We use central air and it stays about 71 in my kids' rooms. The baby wears a sleeper and a sleep sack. DS never really used sleep sacks so I used a fleece sleeper and a onesie underneath.

Can you close any of the vents in his room? We do that in the winter in our house because the other bedrooms all get much warmer with both vents open then it gets in the master where the thermostat is.

Hmmm, IMO it took my kids a while to learn how to cover back up.

Maybe add more PJs? But I'm guessing its the weight of a blanket/sleep sack that was keeping him awake. Maybe try another sleep sack that is plenty big so he can stretch his feet in it?

And I mean, when did they learn how to cover themselves up with a blanket in the crib/in bed to stay warm when they are sleeping?

My son is 22 months and we're going kind of crazy because whenever the air conditioner is running, he either wakes up or starts rolling around, gets very restless in his sleep. We have to keep it SO HOT in our house at night (we live in Florida) that we're not sleeping. He is already in pretty warm socks/pj's. We can sometimes sneak in and cover him up once he's asleep but that usually only lasts an hour or so before he rolls over and kicks the blanket off or whatever.

It is a strange problem but I'm not sure what to do about it! He used to sleep in a sleep sack which handled things, but a few months ago decided he was DONE with it.
