Just wanted to say I’ve been following this thread because I was trying to figure out the same thing for my youngest (17m). She’s been on the late side for nap transitions so I figured she hadn’t been ready, but our schedule has been so wonky since daylight savings, I decided to pull the trigger. She’s done two 1 nap days. The first went pretty well and bedtime was wonderfully easy. But, she woke up after about 45 min or so and needed to be rocked back to sleep, which is unusual for her. Then, last. Night was a complete disaster, she went down well but woke up again at an hour or so, and was so difficult to get back to sleep, to the point that my poor neglected older son came in asking for stuff, waking her up all the way! Then she energetically played until 945pm  I don’t know if this is showing she still needs two naps or what? Help @SweetiePie: !

@Mrs. Turtle: my kids both still do quiet time in their rooms mid day. They aren’t in their beds but they play separately in their own room, looking at books or playing or the 5 year old listens to music on her echo dot. And I get a break during the day, they have downtime without fighting with each other or asking for snacks. It’s nice and I really count on this break!

@Mrs. Turtle: by necessity it was at the same time as big sisters, around 1. And bedtime was around 7:30 ish I think. I had to get her sister from school at noon so I kept them on the same schedule. She usually slept until at least 7 am.

I forgot- I had tried shortening the morning nap to try and keep the afternoon, but more often than not she still refused to nap in the afternoon so she would end up with only one short nap all day. It actually wasn’t too hard of a transition since we could be out and about all morning then. It was just hard for a while because she wanted to fall asleep in the car on the way home for lunch and nap.

Both my kids seemed like they were ready before 12 months- all the things you described, but it actually took months for them to really be ready. With ds1 we just kept shortening his afternoon nap until we decide to force him into one nap because he was becoming do unpredictable. That was around 14 months.

With DS 2 we kept shortening his morning nap and had the afternoon one at the same time as DS1. I said for months I thought he was headed to one nap but it didn't actually happen til 14 months as well. Eventually we could just keep him out all morning.

@Foodnerd81: When you first dropped it, when was her one nap? And was bedtime super early for a while?
I'm used to the early nap refusal-O hasn't napped other than in the car since before she turned 2. She's also turned into a great night sleeper, and at almost 3.5 she handles no nap just fine. I haven't counted on that break during the day in so long, I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway!

My older one dropped it a little later- more “normal” I think, but my younger one has been an early nap dropper. By 12 months she was definitely one nap- the morning nap would be great but she wouldn’t nap in the afternoon at all. So we switched and it was so much better.

Warning, she also dropped her last nap kind of early. Before 3 she was refusing it fairly often even though she’d be a mess before bedtime. But she’s always been a great nighttime sleeper so I guess she just doesn’t like naps.

@SweetiePie: I don't think she's getting overtired before her first nap, in general. She had been right at 2 hours for awake time, and is just now starting to push it to 2.5-3 hours sometimes. I don't think she's 100% ready to switch to one nap yet, but she seems to be heading in that direction. If we try to put her down right at 2 hours, she laughs and pulls our noses and ears until we play with her some more. Then at 2.5-3 hours she goes down on her own without a peep.

15 months is average. We were showing signs around 16 months and fully transitioned at 18 months.

When you say she’s lasting longer and longer in the morning, what do you mean? At that age I believe the max wake time before first nap is 2 hours. If she’s getting overtired that might be why the 2nd nap is harder.
I would try 1-2 weeks of putting her down at 2 hours wake time on the nose. Then try the 2nd nap 2-3 hours later (I’d start with 2 and only extend it if she’s clearly not tired after a few days).

Example:

7am wakeup
9am - 11am nap
1-3pm nap
6pm/7pm bedtime

You can tweak accordingly but this works really well for us.

DD1 I specifically remember made the switch at 15 months. DD2... I can only say she made the switch BY 15 months, I have no idea when :silly:

Both times we made the switch when nap #2 was impacting bed time.

Thank you all! I think our first two were just on the late side, somewhere around 18 months for each of them I think. One of N's naps is often 2+ hours, so I do think she's headed in that direction. I'm not sure how we are going to handle it with a 12:30 preschool pick up for O though!

At home on the weekends we kept her on two naps until 15-16 months old.

E has been taking one nap at daycare since 10 or 11 months but continued taking two naps at home. Now at 17 months she will sometimes still take two naps, other days it's just one on weekends. I try and go with her needs and follow her sleep cues.

We officially dropped at 13 months but she started fighting either the morning or usually afternoon nap at 11.5 months. We kept trying until she fought it for a week straight and then switched her. It took a couple of days but now she naps for at least 2 hours in the afternoon and still sleeps 12 hours at night. I would advise you that if she is fighting the afternoon nap don’t push it if it gets too late, just do an early bedtime. For us, if LO wasn’t asleep by 3 we gave up and did bedtime at 5:30 and that worked for us. So I think 11 mos is generally considered early but not unheard of!

My 15 mo is still on two naps. But he has had more and more difficulty falling asleep at night, with no change in wakeup time (he was on the low range of nighttime sleep hours to start with), so I'm thinking I need to push daycare to make the transition...

Ds1 was around around 14 months but DS2 dropped his morning nap at 11 months very abruptly. Literally had two naps one day, the next day refused to nap in the morning and for every day after that for about a week until I gave up trying. I moved up his afternoon nap a bit and some days he seemed a bit cranky but he adjusted very quickly.

My daughter was about 14 months when she officially dropped, but she has high sleep needs. Even still at 2.5 she sleeps 12 hours a night and takes a 2-3 hour nap during the day.
I think 11 months is normal. My friends son was 10 months. 😭

Both around 12 months. My son was a terrible mapper so I changed him early because I figured it would help (it did!) and my daughter I switched around 12 months too because I wanted her to nap when my son did.

Baby 3 is almost 9 months and today he only had one nap as well! Although this is rare. Usually he has 2 and sometimes three. No schedule at all for the baby of the family, hah.

I seem to have forgotten everything from the first two babies... or N is extremely different. She seems like she's working her way quickly toward one nap per day. She's lasting longer in the morning and getting harder to put down for her afternoon nap. And sometimes her afternoon nap is late enough that bedtime takes forever. She's 11 months. This seems super early, but our other two had so much trauma as infants, so maybe they were unusual because of that? When did your kids switch? How long was it before they were in a good one nap schedule?
