I'd say right around 3. LO1 had an egg allergy and currently has a tree nut allergy. We would tell him constantly how eggs were bad for him and they hurt him and not to touch or eat them. It was a real concern when we took him for his egg challenge to see if he had grown out of it. He got really upset with us and told us that he can't eat eggs because they hurt him. It was tough to go through.

Ultimately, we just continued to reinforce that eggs (and now tree nuts) hurt him, and he can't eat those things.

@Corduroy: Lol! He sounds adorable... and adventurous! TBH my daughter still put lots of random things in her mouth at that age as well - they just change so rapidly and randomly sometimes. Hope it clicks for your DS soon!

@lawbee11: @jhd: Thanks, I'll check out that episode.

@hony bologna: It is hard to imagine my kid being anywhere near that discerning. This kid is a garbage disposal. He licked a handful of sunblock this past weekend and wasn't even upset about the flavor. I've also recently caught him eating bugs and chewing rocks. I thought we were done with the put everything in the mouth phase. Maybe when he turns 2.5.

Around 3, we have a few children's books that we started reading around 2/2.5 and she really just learned it from there!

My LO understood at 2 and would ask if something had gluten in it by saying, 'Glooty?' Lol. She just turned 3 and has opted to become a vegetarian and will ask the origin of everything she eats to check that it doesn't contain meat. You might be closer than you think! I think it helps to get them to feel personal responsibility for their diet/health choices, etc.

My LO also doesn’t have allergies but he’s not quite 3.5 and he understands that sometimes people can’t eat certain things based on that Daniel Tiger episode. I would definitely recommend it!

My LO doesn’t have allergies but my best friend’s son does and she definitely understands that he’s allergic to peanuts and can’t have them. She’s 4 now but I’d say she has understood it since 3.5. There’s a Daniel Tiger episode about it and that helped for sure (they live down the street so we’ve talked about how we can’t have snacks with peanuts when he’s over).

DS is 2yo and was recently diagnosed with a walnut allergy. My 4yo kind of gets it but DS has no idea. When did your LO start to understand?
