I didn't have any restrictions, but I think the last long drive we took- 3 hours- was around 36 weeks. After that I didn't feel comfortable being out of town.

@Mrs. Blue: By coincidence I mentioned to my doctor that DH and I were going to Chicago for the weekend which is literally only 4h from us....and she told me to stop and walk EVERY hour. She said sitting for long periods can push pressure on the cervix AND sitting upright for so long can cause blot clots because of the increased blood volume.
So, we'd stop at a gas station (i'd pee of course!) and I'd walk around the car, clean the windows, stretch and breathe for about 5 mins and we'd get back in. I felt 100% fine!

*I was 28w at the time

36 weeks-no more than 1 hour from hospital. My husband had a big work event 80 miles away last weekend and I really wanted to go, and probably could have, but the thought of even potentially delivering in a small podunk town was not appealing to me!

I was told after 36 weeks no car trips more than an hour from the hospital.
But if your doctor isn't putting that restriction on you and you feel up to it, I wouldn't be worried.

I traveled to a remote island when I was 39 weeks pregnant (by car and boat). My personality is pretty much the opposite of paranoid. My doctor had no problem with it!

My midwife never gave me any restrictions on driving, but I decided at 36 weeks to stop traveling more than an hour from the hospital. And when we went on vacation when I was around 20 weeks, I insisted we stay in the only town I could find on the Outer Banks with a real hospital in case anything happened! I was paranoid.

My commute home from work can take 2 hours or even more if traffic is particularly bad. 2-3 hours wouldn't faze me unless I was going to be driving up into the middle of a mountain range in winter or something, like @sloaneandpuffy said.

Never. I was told it really depends on where you're going. If you're going to a big city or whatever, you're probably fine. If you're going 3 hours into the wilderness (which I doubt), you should probably think twice.

I have the same situation at work since I travel a lot by car, a lot of times over 1 hour. I'm 31, almost 32 weeks and brought it up at my last appointment and my Dr said the same thing - I shouldn't travel more than an hour after 36 weeks. I brought it up to my boss at work and she was fine with that. If I need to do meetings, I'll teleconference or phone in.

With my first pregnancy, my OB said not to travel further than 1 hour from the hospital when I was 36w; that is because at 36w they won't necessarily stop you if you go into labor and he didn't want me to end up possibly delivering while on a trip.

For trips that were 2-3 hr he just recommended that I make frequent stops to walk around for about 5min to help prevent blood clots.

i went apple picking 2 hours away, and went into labor 2 days later at 35 weeks, 2 days. i could have easily gone into labor while i was 2 hours away from home! i probably would have been fine.... it was a rural area, but i would have been able to make it to a hospital.

There is no real concern with car travel in and of itself. Like @jessiejo17: it's just that once you get close to your due date you don't want to be too far away from your hospital. I don't think it's unreasonable for work to not expect you to travel in the last month of your pregnancy. Prior to that you should have no issues going 2-3 hours from home.

My doctor just told me to stay within an hour of the hospital when I hit 37 weeks. She did mention if we go on any longer car rides before then to get out and stretch and walk around every hour or so as we are more prone to blood clots being pregnant.

I think my sheet said no international after 32 weeks and no domestic (over an hour) after 36 weeks. Assuming this can all change depending on how my body reacts to pregnancy.

We're planning on traveling to Philadelphia (which is about 2 hours away) by car when I'm 36.5 weeks. My doctor just said we'll see how the pregnancy is going at that point, but if everything is going smoothly then there's no reason for me to not go.

I was stopped at 22 weeks from flying because I ended up in the ER on a business trip when I fainted. I don't think my MD would have stopped me from car travel.

I just realized I may have an issue with traveling and work late in my pregnancy. For my job, I ocassionally have to travel by car on trips that are 2-3 hours one way. I'm usually only gone for one or two days.

Did you doctor restrict that kind of travel? If so, at what point did that restriction start?
