After thinking about this more I am more upset with DH than school. Don't get me wrong I am feeling a ton of pressure from them to feed ("try these foods at home too") him stuff we wouldn't introduce for a while or even buy. Although I think LO will do fine with BLW/ table food DH is very much opposed. I have to hear it from him and school and be the advocate and bad guy.

We went through the menu and picked out all the fresh cut fruits and veggies we are okay with them giving. Some of the stuff they serve is swimming in sugary syrup. We will also buy a box of Puffs as an alternative to Graham crackers and Cheez its they can give him at snack time. We will ask the pediatrician about LO's dairy sensitivity/ intolerance before we sign off on cottage cheese, yogurt, and cheese at school at his upcoming 9 months appointment.

Thanks guys for the replies- reassurance & advice.

Similar story as @MrsBrewer: re: teeth. My LO is now 15 months old and has only had two bottom teeth since he was 12 months old. He eats any & everything, it's kind of amazing...

We did BLW, so he was on table food from the start. We didn't have them feed him food until he was maybe 8 months old. I'm not a huge fan of the school lunches, so I look over their menu every week and cross out what I don't want him to have and supplement with food from home

Maybe he just had an off day and wasn't that hungry. Also, jarred baby food is the same thing as table food, just pureed! So no difference what it is as long as it is healthy. I don't think it's a big deal at all.

@kiddosc: I think DH began to realize that as the day wore on. We only ever had one DCP alternative we liked and that one doesnt have cameras.

We had to pick up kids earlier today due to weather, so I didn't have the opportunity to talk with his teacher. He only had one jar leftover- not two, so yesterday may have been a fluke.

@sapphire: @MrsBrewer: @PawPrints: thanks, I think LO will be able to handle the table food too.

For solids, she was 100% on the table food that they provided at the center by the time she was 9 months, and we stopped sending in anything other than breast milk. We'd already been doing table food since six months at home (BLW).

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Also I consider a new room and new teachers basically the same as a new center. You've got to tell them your expectations, you have to learn the new procedures, etc. So I wouldn't assume that just because the other room did it that they know the same expectations.

Just an FYI regarding LO's eating and no teeth. My DD never ate purees, hated them in fact. Only like table food. She didn't get her first 2 teeth until she was 10 months, and then didn't get anymore until she was 1 year. She still ate a ton by gumming it! just make sure the pieces are small enough.

My LO is on mostly table foods now, cut into small pieces and she turned 10 months on Christmas. As long as food is cut small and cooked well, there really isn't much that she can't eat. Also, yogurt is very different that straight milk and is recommended as a first food. Of course, if your LO has dairy sensitivity that's a different issue. I think that mostly table foods at 8.5 months is young.

I wouldn't switch daycares after one day of them altering the feeding plan. I would voice my displeasure and reiterate the plan, maybe talk to the director. I think there needs to be open communication with a care provider. If it's one strike, you're out, then you're going to be switching daycares a lot.

ETA: LO only has two bottom teeth, but can eat things like cheese, cucumbers, and pieces of meat without issue.

I sent one portion of purée or soft food like banana from 6-9 months. After that she just ate the table foods served by daycare. We did one more set I g of purred with dinner. The amount you are sending sounds like a lot to me!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: if he ate that much purée and formula when he got home, to me that would indicate he probably didn't eat much table food and therefore because he came home with his extra food uneaten, he didn't eat much food at all-and that would make me upset. Unless of course he did eat a lot of table food while there? My daughter definitely was not and some days is still not good on just table food and she is 14 months. I give her a pouch when she doesn't eat much because I want something in her tummy. I also take care of a little boy the same age who was on formula and started with me at 11 months. I would give him a banana )he would eat a whole one) or apple sauce or a pouch if he didn't eat enough table food. Nowadays he is pretty good and hasn't had formaula since 13 months, but it took us a while to get here.

I would be upset for the daycare to not follow my feeding schedule and you guys know how much table food he eats at home so you'll know how much he'll likely eat of it at daycare right now. Honestly, having worked in a few centres and now at my home, I would do whatever parents wanted for food if they sent it in. So if yohopefully gave me food to feed your kid in addition to mine then I would feed it to him unless he was absolutely too full and refused it.

@T.H.O.U.: it's never been an issue before, so I haven't said explicitly they must follow the feeding plan. I'm pretty anal so I even wrote out we will send two jars of prunes for a total 5 oz that gets mixed with cereal. The morning teacher had a question about the cereal consistency, so the first day he was there I made the cereal with her.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Also have you explicitly made it clear that you want him to have ALL of the food you provide? I would send a note in that says please feed all food at these times. That way they understand its not really just a supplemental optional choice but what you want him to primarily be eating.

DH is going to go with me at pick up so we can discuss this food stuff. If we don't like what we hear we will switch LO. The alternative DCP has openings now. We will probably be out an extra month of daycare costs since the current center requires 30 days notice. There was something else that happened in this room- he's only been there four days- that irked me, so it won't be any love loss if we move him.

ETA: DH spoke with a friend of his whose child is older than ours. Although she agrees the menu is not the best particularly for an under 1 yr old baby his stance is changing. It will be interesting to see how much food was opened/ consumed today.

@2littlepumpkins: LO is ready to eat table food and supervised by us we have given celery sticks and apple slices. DH doesn't like the idea of him getting potential choking hazards away from us. The new room seems more chaotic and has a 6:1 baby to teacher ratio. I get that fear.

@T.H.O.U.: I'm not sure how much say we get on the home from food in this particular class room or the next. However, the alternative DCP we contacted allows home from food until 18 months. This DCP is feeding babies Cheezits. By a year and a half I'm sure Cheezits won't register to me at least at being remotely bad, but right now it seems really bad.

@SLR: that is on his detailed sheet. Jar of puree at lunch and one as an afternoon snack. I send an extra one in case he still shows hunger signs. They didn't follow that.

@Mrs. Carrot: I can't imagine LO turning down a spoonful of baby food. He is known for being a good eater at daycare. The three jars that came back home yesterday were unopened.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: In that case, yeah...I'd request that he get maybe two jars a day (vs. your four if I'm following correctly) in addition to the table food. My almost 10 month old wouldn't fill up on the limited offering of table foods that she is able to eat at daycare as on now.

I would have a discussion with your husband about when he does feel its appropriate to start solid foods. I would think by this age you want them to start eating more than purees.

However, I understand the issues with not loving daycare food. But maybe the compromise with your DH is that he gets solid food but solid food sent from home.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I admit, I didn't worry about yogurt when my LO was under 1, even though it was milk, but I can see your point, especially if your LO has allergies. I guess I would still wonder if your LO didn't want to eat the other jars and that's why they came back, or if they just didn't give them to him. Either way it sounds like you guys either need a new spot with a menu you like better or have an intentional conversation with your DCP about what your child is fed.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I think your LO is old enough to be practicing with table foods but I wouldn't count on it being a whole meal. If it's self feeding they are after maybe sending pouches instead of jars could accomplish that. But not feeding enough because they are pushing food he's not 100% ready for is where I think they are wrong. I would tell them: these are the foods I am ok with LO having, but I would like him also to be fed what I'm sending after being given the chance to practice table foods. Otherwise he is coming home too hungry. And I would say I'm a little caught off guard here with this because we were told x y z.

I think it's actually kind of odd for daycares to not allow parent packed meals.

@Mrs. Carrot: the lead teacher said some things like apple sauce, yogurt, and cottage cheese would be fed to them to make sure they get the nutrition. However, isn't yogurt in a similar vain as whole milk? Ok after 1, but not before and our baby is lactose sensitive/intolerant. We are ok with the all natural, no sugar added Apple in the purées we feed LO, but school applesauce would contain stuff we don't want at this young age.

@SLR: yes. They give all the parents a copy of the school menu to circle what the babies can have at the 5 meal times- breakfast, lunch, 3 snacks. I am more open to table food than my husband so I asked the teacher if I am only circling one thing how does LO get full. She told me in the beginning to send jar food.

Part of the issue is that DH doesn't like the school menu, but the bigger part is that he doesn't think table food at this age is age-appropriate. Since they didn't feed him everything we sent yesterday (less at one meal, no snack meal at all) he's pissed.

The room he was in before was for mobile/ non-cruising babies and had a 10 mos old in there. It seems like they needed that room for non-mobile older tiny babies. My baby along with much of his old class got bumped to the next room. The new room, however, is a readiness room for the walking one year olds.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Is it possible he didn't want it or was the jar not even opened? If that's the case, you should definitely address it with the DCP. Hopefully it was just an oversight, but if they aren't even trying to feed him on your schedule, that's a problem. We sent table food when LO was ready for them, but it wasn't until she was after a year old, and it was at the recommendation of the DCP that she was ready for them. Food before one for fun, and all that. They aren't old enough at 8.5 months to get enough nutrition out of table food.

I think I'm confused too. Does his new room want him on table food in lieu of puréed, or in addition to? If it's in place of the purées you are sending, I think it's too early. At this age I'd think he'd still be filling up on your jars as "meals" and the bits of table food are more for practice and snacks.

@ShootingStar: they did not give him school food or at least that was not on his sheet. We are upset because they did not feed him according to his schedule/ usual amount.

@Dagret: @Mrs. Microscope: 8.5 months. Based on his daily sheet, he did not nap through a meal or bottle. From 1:45pm (bottle) to 5pm (bottle) he did not have a puree and usually would. In the morning he usually would have been given two jars of prunes mixed with cereal instead of one.

I'm confused, are you guys upset because they gave him the school food? Or did they not feed the purees you sent? At that age our daycare did not feed them the school food. We would supply them with a bunch of jars of food and they would feed him 1 or 2 at a time, depending on how hungry he seemed. I wouldn't be thrilled with daycare feeding my infant table food because of the choking hazards. I'd prefer to do it myself.

How old is LO?

Regardless, if the DCP said they would follow your feeding preferences, and have now changed their policy, you need to address this with the teachers and director. Because that's the bigger issue than if LO is eating table food or not (and it should be your choice as the parents, not up to the DCP). Good luck!

I started to send table foods as soon as my kids could pick them up and gum them - maybe around 8 or 9 months? Things like puffs, shredded meat, cheese, beans, etc.

ETA: did he have long naps or something today? Sometimes the naps can screw up their eating time in the infant room.

Yesterday LO came home with a lot of extra food and ate like a horse for dinner.

His new room really wants all the kids on table foods/ school lunch and they have kids his age, 8 months to a year old. We send, 2 jars of prunes to mix with cereal and 3 jars of purées. The amount we send was based off of his prior room teachers' saying he wanted more food. He came home with one jar of prunes and 2 jars of purées, typically he would just have one purée jar left over. For dinner he ate two jars of purées and 3 oz of formula. Usually, we can space out a bottle 45 minutes later, but he was still so hungry after the two jars.

DH is beside himself over this because they didn't follow our feeding plan although they said they would and would wait until we gave them the go ahead for table food. We may be looking at alternatives at this point. I'm just trying to get a feel if DH is in fact over reacting a bit. LO is ready for table food, but doesn't have teeth. DH is concerned about safety and nutritional value.
