We are not normal in this area, but I'll share anyway. We didn't let my older daughter watch anything (no tv, no iPad, nothing) until her third birthday. This was based on a recommendation from our pediatrician at the time, as well as a close friend who is a child psychiatrist. DH would like to set the same rule for DD2, who is 20 months, but I think it's going to be a lot harder, since she's around when her sister watches. We may just try to make it to 2 yrs with her.

We almost never turn on the TV at home, and definitely not when our 18mo is around/awake. The only TV exposure he gets is when we are in public (e.g., at a restaurant with a tv). He does occasionally look at photos or watch videos of himself on my phone, and his grandparents let him play with their iPhones but he mostly just pretends that he's making a phone call.

I have shown him other videos on youtube a couple of times. Once he saw a violin in one of his books and got really interested in the word, so I showed him a video of a violin performance. Another time we were talking about airplanes so I found a video of takeoffs and landings.

That's about it. I find tv annoying, especially the commercials, so I'm happy to just leave it off. I think we got rid of most of our cable awhile ago. My husband handled it and I'm not sure of the details. We don't watch sports on tv except for the Olympics. So I guess we will need to decide whether or not to share that with our son next year, or limit our viewing to times when he is asleep.

D's first "real" screen time was around 14m when he had a respiratory infections and I needed something to keep him calm during nebulizer treatments - Bubble Guppies on my laptop to the rescue. Prior to that, the tv was almost always on, but nothing that interested him so he never paid attention (except for when I watched So You Think You Can Dance, ha!). Now, at 30-something months, he gets 30-45 minutes of screen time per day - either a tv show, a chunk of a movie, or he gets to play games on my tablet.

I think maybe 18 months? I didn't mind that he's watching TV, except he'd keep asking for more so I kept it minimal until he was older and could sort of understand when enough is enough. I'm sure the baby will get screen time way earlier watching with her brother, but it's still not a lot of TV.

@snowjewelz: if you want to decrease the zombie effect without ditching screens entirely, have you tried turning down the brightness? Or choosing older shows like classic Sesame Street? Modern shows change camera angles and flicker much faster which makes that zone out happen easily.

Screen time for LO specifically started when LO was about 18 months when i was super sick from my second pregnancy. At that point she started watching 1-2 kid shows a day. After I felt better I cut it down to just occasionally.

Now at age 2, we end up letting her play apps or watch a show about every other day.

@rachiecakes: same. I'm not going to avoid having the TV on just because DD is in the room. Heck – we even put a couple of Barney videos on the iPad for her at four months and she loved them and was so smiley while she watched.

DD - we were pretty good about waiting until 2. She got a few Youtube vids here and there, and FaceTime, but it was nowhere near a regular thing until after she was 2. Now at 3, she gets some shows and educational apps. People have always commented about her being verbally advanced and articulate and I attributed that to lots of interaction and no screen time... BUT...

DS started getting some screen time at about 15 mo? And I think he's on par with DD in terms of his speech development, so I'm okay with it all. He's 18 mo now and has a wide vocab and can string words together so while I feel guilty about the shows/apps at times, overall I'm at peace with it!

They still don't get any screen time on weekdays, though I think this will change once Baby 3 comes along and I drop them to part-time daycare.

No screen time just for LO 1 until 2 but we watched sports around her during the olympics and football season. I think it was around 20ish months for LO 2..we let LO 1 watch some stuff during baby sister's naps.

LO is six months old and we're making a valiant effort to get to 2 years with no screen time other than Skyping with grandparents. This is challenging during football season, but so far we're able to distract/play with her to keep her attention away from the TV (it helps that it's high up on the wall).

@Mae: That's great that she doesn't even care! I feel any screens is like a magnet to her!

@junebugsmama: Yes; when we fly I for sure will let her watch videos, hah! But I guess only as last resort and only for maybe 15 min max or something like that per session? We used to watch TV while she plays too but recently she really would stare at it too, and since our TV screen is so big we decided to turn it off now!

@Adira: I don't think it's the fact that they get screen time that bothers me... It's the fact that recently in the mornings once I'm done getting ready, I tell her to say bye bye to video and turn it off and she whines!

@winniebee: Haha I think if he's interacting with it, that's much better! K tends to like STARE at the screen not moving at all, totally memorized and I don't like that!

Well, R is almost 10 months and has had plenty because his brother gets to watch a show or two a day. He didn't used to care about it....but now when Team Umi Zumi comes on (even if he hears it from another room) he speed crawls in and starts clapping and laughing. It doesn't hold his attention but he definitely thinks TV is fun!

not much during the week (typical weekday he would not get any, but there have been exceptions), but gets his fair share on the weekend - i guess an hour or two here and there. it varies though, when we have more stuff to get done at home or are sick/really tired, he gets more screen time, when we have planned activities and are out on the weekend, he gets less.

@Mae: I wonder about this, if it's nice to have some exposure so they aren't obsessive when they do see it? Similar to exposure to junk food and sweets? I mean to not a perfect comparison, obviously it wouldn't help to have sweets sitting out all the time to reduce the excitement factor!

But for real, this is a point of contention between dh and me. He likes to turn on the tv for the baby. DS seems to only periodically watch. For the most part he prefers crawling around the room and playing.

Never and always? lol. My LO is 16 mo and she doesn't ever get personal screen time. As in-- kid shows/videos. I did try once a few months ago when she was sick but she doesn't care to watch, she's got toddler places to be and toddler stuff to do and she can't be bothered. At the same time, I binge watch netflix all the time when she is in the room and I'm not concerned about it. She never seems to watch or notice except she likes the music at the start/end of shows and she'll do a little dance (which I find hilarious).

I feel like you just do what works for you/your kid and don't worry about it :)

DD is 10 mo next week and I let her watch something on the ipad for like 5-10 min in the mornings when we both have to get ready...

And I sometimes let her watch something on my phone for a longer car ride since she does not like car rides...

Lately tho she gets mad when I turn it off, so now I'm freaking out and going to stop letting her watch anything! My solution for mornings is to baby proof upstairs and let her roam around instead of being stuck in the pnp. As for car rides... I might still let her watch something, since we get out when we get to our destination so she doesn't care.

ETA - I think it's not the screen time that bothers me.. I think if they have fun with it, or are learning something, and it's not excessive then it's ok. But it's when they become obsessed with it I guess!
