Around 8/8.5 months, when he got his pincer grasp down. That's when we started doing lots more finger foods.

We're about half and half now and it just started last week when he got the pincer. It will happen. I was thinking I'd be feeding him the rest of his life.

@Smurfette: our LO did that too... We'd put things on her tray and she'd pick it up, then drop it and then open her mouth for us to feed it to her. She started feeding herself at like 9 months 4 days. One meal she wouldn't, the next morning she went all out. Something just clicked I guess!

Sadie will be 9 months tomorrow, and she'll feed herself, but she'd rather feed the dog. She's not great at actually chewing the food though - she only chews half the time. She's always choking and gagging, and FREAKS ME OUT.

We are not even close to self feeding at 10 months. He'll pick up a baby "cookie" and suck on it and will pick up puffs but won't eat them. He will gobble down purees like there is no tomorrow but anything remotely solid he purses his lips tighter than clamshell and turns his face away. I'm hoping he gets the hang of it soon!

@Smurfette: we just kept trying. L is verrryyyy independent though.

And at that age, we bought some pouch pops on amazon. They're silicone spouts that screw onto the tip of the pouch. L loved them but our friend's son K hated them.

@Smurfette: Ohmahgawsh the baby bird mouth! That is so cute! And once she gets more comfortable with the texture and her grab, she will be off and running with the Puffs! And then you'll start finding Puffs everywhere . . . like in your bra! :P

BabyGloss is a really good puree eater too. Her new thing is being able to sign *more* . . .which means both more, and, when I touch something that she wants, she also signs *more*.

@MsLipGloss: R is like a little bird, sticks her heard forward and her mouth open, saying feed me Mommy! Cracks me up. She is getting better with puffs, picked up two this weekend!

We weren't there at 8 months either. At that point, LO was eating Puffs consistently, and I think maybe a baby cookie or two, but that was it. I had tried a couple of things (cut up banana and avocado), but she didn't seem to like how they felt, and wasn't really interested. But she loved purees!

It wasn't until closer to a year that she would feed herself enough for a meal. Before then she would basically self-feed only her favorites, and we fed her the rest.

R loves purees but doesn't seem interested in feeding herself. She will with Mum Mums and Bananas. Otherwise she wants us to feed her. We tried broccoli and turkey lunch meat yesterday and she just played with it. I put some in her mouth and she would eat it. Then I put a banana on the tray and she gobbled it up. She doesn't have her pincer grasp down great yet, so maybe that is it. She is 8 months today.
