@CupQuakeWalk: I'm glad we're not the only ones! M is 16 months and I think she actually eats less food when we give her utensils because she gets so distracted by playing with them.

wow...LO is 15.5m and NO WHERE near being able to eat using utensils. I mean, when we've tried, he just uses it as a hammer and bangs on his highchair tray, so we've got a ways to go.

DD really loves using utensils. She could use the fork and spoon by 12 months.

DS is 14.5 months and isn't very good. The problem with spoons is that I can prefill it but he then turns it upside down when putting it in his mouth so everything falls off. It really only works with something like hummus. He hasn't been able to really scoop stuff up himself yet. As for a fork, he tries to stab something but can't get it. So we put food on the fork and then he's good about making it to his mouth.

DS is 14.5 months and has been OBSESSED with utensils the last month. To the point where he won't eat, unless we let him try to feed himself. and the boy loves food, so he means business! He does well with pieces of veggies/meat/toast. spoonfuls of rice we scoop for him and then he'll feed himself about half a spoonful, it's a give and take process and he'll still use his hands when he gets super hungry! :P

S is 16 months and is not getting the hang of it. We give him a fork at every meal, but he will stab something and take it off the fork with his other hand and put it in his mouth. He does the same with a spoon. I have a feeling he'll be feeding himself with his fingers for a while!

@mrskc: Just after Christmas? Spoon first for a few weeks, and fork just recently. However I will say we cheat a bit! She can spoon from a bowl no problem, but only fork from the table! When stuff is in bowl or on plate she wants to fork either the food slips on the plate, or the plate slips on the table and she doesn't know to hold her plate, so whatever she forks just goes on the table and she stabs it and wolfs it in, lol.

M is almost 15 months and feeds herself with a fork and spoon, and gets food in her mouth 75% of the time, but it is quite messy!

C is good now (spoon and fork), however she has messed herself up (I think) trying to be a righty! She has been using utensils left handed and is now switching herself to her right and is losing her food in the process of the switch! Will be interesting to see if she uses them both ways, or is going to switch to the right!

My kids are really good with forks now at 18 months. It clicked a few months ago. Giving them real metal salad forks made a huge difference. They are still not great with spoons yet.

With my oldest... a REALLY long time. So long that I can't remember. Then again he's almost 5. With my youngest, gosh, he probably started around 12 months. He ate so much better with his hands and ate much more little cubed food (finger food) at 6/7 months than my oldest. At 22 months he can get about 95% of the food in his mouth with a spoon or fork and I even started letting him use training chopsticks and he's not too bad except he needs help when his fingers slip out of the training supports.

Over the last week or so, DS must hold a spoon or fork while he eats. (he's 15.5 months). It's funny to watch him try to use them. If he actually manages to get a piece of food on it, it falls off by the time it gets to his mouth.

How long did it take your LO to get the hang of utensils? How old were they?
