The most the hygenist could do was get him to open his mouth and let her count his teeth. Everyone you ask has a different opinion! LOL </p> <p>It's more about getting them comfortable with the visits than anything. Went to our pedi a couple days later and she said the same thing. He just made sure there were no cavities and that it looked like we were brushing his teeth well. </p> <p>He went for his first cleaning in September at 2.5 years and it went great. I asked at my cleaning when she was around 18 months (we go to a family dentist) and they said there was no point going before 2. So she came with my to my appointment when she was around 2 and sat in the chair and they counted her teeth and gave her a toothbrush. Then at 2 1/2 they did an actual cleaning (again after my cleaning) and she did awesome! The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends by the first birthday, but even at her second appointment at 21 months, DD had trouble with stranger anxiety and sitting still. Her dentist was awesome with it though! And I was glad I did because 4 months later she was walking, slipped, and chipped off a piece of the bottom of our stair bannister with her tooth!!! I was so glad I had a dentist to call and visit the next day!!
