@artbee: I am so sorry you have to go through this. It is not a pleasant experience I know. Just remember you know your child and you know that something isn't right. If the doctor doesn't address your concerns, go see someone else. No baby (or parent) should have to be in pain like that. I know that the hardest thing is to look at your child and know they are in pain but have no way to help. Good luck and I hope you get some answers.

My LO has it and is only 2.5 months. Her pediatrician suggested to skip a few doses just before her 4 month appt to see how she does.
@artbee: Sorry the screaming fits have returned. Have they adjusted her dose recently? After our 2 month appt my LO's dose almost doubled because she put on 2 lbs

@brownie: thanks for all the advice! I'll have to start doing more research.

Unfortunately the screaming fits returned so we're going back to the doctor today. I just can't stand to see my baby in so much pain!

@artbee: I have had to do a lot of my own research into this. My doctor wasn't helpful at all. My story is that we were diagnosed at 2 weeks old with reflux (we brought him home and he screamed 12 hours straight). We started him on zantac. Less than 1 month later it wasn't working so we started Prilosec. This worked much better. He was no longer screaming but still spitting up and spitting up more than before. We thought it was fine because he was now a "happy spitter". But his stools were still wrong. They were either running through too fast or too slow (what is as close to constipation a breastfed baby can get). We started giving him pear juice watered down to help with the bowel movements at 3 1/2 months old. We also decided to try an elimination diet. That worked. Throughout all of this my doctor told us that he shouldn't have solids and it must be something I am eating but was mostly no help.

So, here is my advice only. You don't have to take it but it may be something to look into and think about. You are the mother and you know your child. You know if there is something wrong or not. I knew that what was happening still wasn't right even though he was "happy".

Switching formula may help with the constipation if you child has protein intolerance (the main type of allergen at this age). So, starting solids wouldn't necessarily increase or affect allergies. There is a correlation between starting calories and obesity. So you can take that how you want.

I wouldn't add the rice cereal formula because like you are saying, it will increase the constipation issues. It also isn't as useful with reflux as they like to tell you (google it) and is empty calories. If you want to thicken the formula, I suggest a vegetable. NuturMe has dried veggies you could add to the bottle.

My main suggestion would be to switch to a hypoallergenic formula (nutragemin or allumentum). Or see a gastroenterologist.

@looch: Yeah, I see a lot of people saying they started at 4 months but they said just to be sure in case of allergies we should wait. And I figure I have no real reason to start now, so why not just wait.

Oh okay, I didn't get her age. I started solids at 5 months, split the difference between the range of recs I saw and at my doctors advice.

@looch: The doctor said no solids until 6 months, she's only 4 :( It's not a huge deal now, like I said the screaming fits are over so she isn't in pain from it. It's just spit up, which is more annoying than anything. I was just curious to when it might end.

Try an orange vegetable, like carrots, sweet potatoes or butternut squash instead of rice cereal. Also, any fruit that starts with a "p" is generally good for constipation. Pears are a great first fruit.

I think meds are a good idea if there is obvious pain, don't get me wrong. My son was a happy spitter, lol.

@looch: That makes sense because the doctor said we could try switching to a formula that is thicker with rice cereal in it.... but then it would make her already constipation issue worse.

We had to put her on meds because she would have some pretty major screaming fits, especially after she was on her back. My MIL insisted it was just gas and her personality, but I knew my baby was in pain! And sure enough the doctor said reflux and the screaming has stopped ever since she's been on the meds.

We didn't have DS on meds, but he was a spitter. It stopped when he got the hang of solid food, around 6 months.

@artbee: could still be from the formula. Have you tried nutragemin or allumentum? We did just finish weaning him from prilosec 2 months ago. He was a silent spitter and now with teething we hear him gag on all the saliva and mucus.

DD had mild reflux and gas up until about 3 months, than it just went away. She was always very hard to burp, but right around that time she was burping like a charm. Never tried to give her any meds though. I guess it wasn't that severe.
