We had it at the bottom of stairs we didn't use and he saw his sister do it many times, then he was obsessed with the stairs. Ds (10.5m) has been able to get it open for awhile now but I'm not sure exactly when it happened..maybe 8-9m? He can't do it if it's locked though. It took dd longer- she was I think closer to 1.5 before she started opening it.
