Not long after she started daycare, so maybe 14 months? She doesn't like when other people feed her, so she started doing it on her own very quickly. My son was more like 20 months, simply because we just keep spoon feeding him without really letting him try.

@Bao: We've got a spoon-flipper, too! She's almost 22 months and I'd say 50% of the time she flips it (always with something messy like soup, too...lol). Other than that she's been using utensils since around 15 months really well. I was surprised how fast she caught on!

My LO is too stubborn to accept any help with eating, so he's been very good with the spoon since about 15 months? He definitely used to do that flipping thing when he was learning. He still has a hard time with the fork though at 25 months, he loses patience and just picks things up!

We're still working on it at 24 months. My husband sits there going "you have to keep it level!" and I'm like "he doesn't know what that means!" He's good with cereal, but soup...not so much. Weirdly with ice cream he never loses a bite!

LO is 22 months and does pretty well with a fork, and half the time with a spoon. The other half of the time though, right before she puts it in her mouth, she flips it upside down and usually whatever is on it falls off. Then she ends up super frustrated. I keep trying to show her to keep her spoon upright but always at that last second she flips it.

When did your LO master the spoon with minimal spilling?
