@IRunForFun: This sounds so much like my son, it's good to hear that the transition to the crib went so smoothly!

I also love the variety on this thread, it's helpful to see that there are many different approaches that can work depending on the kid...

Until she was 8 months, she had a nap around 4-5. Usually just a short catnap, but that meant she could stay up till DS went to bed around 9.

Now she's dropped the nap around 10 months, she goes to bed around 8.

Apparently we're night owls :)

Around 2 months for DS1, right away for DS2. We just did bedtime for both and let him sleep until he woke up.

DD didn't really have a set bedtime until we moved her to the crib somewhere around 3.5 months. Before that, if I was crazy tired I'd bring her into the bedroom with me around 8 pm, we'd nurse and snooze on and off until 11 pm, at which point she'd usually do her longest stretch of sleep.

When we started putting her in the crib, I'd start her off in there at 8, fully anticipating a wake up to feed between 11 and midnight, but it wasn't long before she started stretching that to 2 am. As she started longer and longer stretches of sleep, we moved her bedtime back a bit. At 13 months she is going to bed around 7:30, but she's still on 2 naps. I think once she drops her second nap we will start putting her down between 6:30 and 7.

Thank you all, this is super helpful! Seems like it could make sense to keep doing the bedtime routine around 8 and trying to put him down then, and hopefully once he's old enough he'll stay down rather than taking a short snooze and waking again.

At 6 weeks, both would take cat naps and cluster feed until about 10pm. Then I could put them down and get a few hour stretch. Once they started daycare (4 months for my first, 3 months for the second) their sleeping patterns shifted to what they needed to be.

My first had a bedtime of 8pm for a long time. We shifted to 7:15 once he started Kindergarten. My second goes to bed between 6:15-6:30 (he is definitely a better sleeper than my first!).

My son who is 9 weeks is currently hovering around 7:30-8 pm. Sometimes I think he could go down earlier if he doesn’t take a catnap around 5:30. He sleeps until around 3, nurses and then back to sleep until 630 or so; there might be another random wake up mixed in there.
We are a very early bedtime family compared to my friends. My 3 year old goes down at 645 on the dot (still naps) When she was little it was closer to 530 or 6. My husband is out of the country all week so I don’t have to keep them up to see him.

We've always done a 730-8pm-ish bedtime and then did a 1030 pm dreamfeed, whether they woke up for it or not. We made the feedings closer together in the late afternoon/evening, so they'd have smaller, more frequent feedings at 430, 630, and then 8pm. Then we'd wake them around 1030pm for another feeding before we went to bed and then let them go until they woke up.

Once they got into a good groove on that schedule (around 6-7 weeks for DS2 - DS1 was a psycho) I'd do 430pm feeding and then a good long feeding starting around 7pm and then put them down by 730pm. Dreamfeed again at 10pm.

I dropped the dreamfeed gradually once they were sleeping from DF to morning all the way through.

Maybe 3 months... but "earlier" was 9 pm :crying: Now they're OK with 8:30, but that didn't happen until they started getting more tired in day care because of getting moved into an older group that challenged them more.

Both kids shifted their bedtimes earlier right around 2 months (DS was 9/10 weeks, DD was 8 weeks). DD was ready earlier and pushed it herself - same story as @LBee where our pediatrician was surprised at her 4mo appt that she already had a set 7pm bedtime.

Around 2-3 months she was getting her last feed btwn 8 and 9 and then going to bed after that. Now in daycare at 4 months she goes to bed sometime btwn 6:30 and 7:30 depending on her last nap and general mood.

Both my kids (28mo, 10mo) go to bed pretty early-lights out at 6:30

We started to do official bedtime once the baby started to consolidate sleep into naps and not simply sleep around the the clock. Probably around 3/4 months we had 3 naptimes and then a bedtime.

I kept bedtime fairly late for both children for quite some time, which goes against a lot of conventional advice but worked for us. My first had a really late bedtime (midnight to 2 am) until about 4 months, when I was able to transition him to a bedtime of around 10 pm. I liked the later bedtime because it maximized my sleep (he was sleeping 8-9 hours straight, so I could too). My second I started with a 9:30 bedtime right away because it worked so well for us. With both, I did not move to a much earlier bedtime around when I weaned around 13-14 months, which also corresponded to moving to one nap.

Official bedtime for us occurred when each child moved to his/her crib. This was 10 weeks for both children. Prior to that I loosely put them down at 7 PM, but I didn't do anything that signaled "this is bedtime."

We went to the ped last month for our 4 month check-up and she told us we should start working on a bedtime. She said most kids at 4 months were still going to bed around 10 PM and then sleeping through the night. She was surprised that our LO already had a structured bedtime.

DS1 - 4 months. He stopped napping well during the day and therefore needed 7 pm bedtime.

DS2 - 2 months. A late bedtime wasn't convenient since I had to be up with a toddler at 6:30 so we moved to 8 pm bedtime.

DS3 - He was more of a night owl. I tried at 3 months and he resisted...kept trying. 8 pm bedtime really didn't stick until 4-5 months or so!

Baby sleep books confuse me - the advice seems to be all over the place! I know at some point my LO will need an early bedtime, but I'm curious when others started transitioning to that?

Right now my LO is 6 weeks, and definitely has a strong drive to cluster feed in the evening. He will take really short naps, but he doesn't usually settle into his first stretch of night sleep until later at night. Right now he cluster feeds and dozes in the early evening, we give him a bath and 3 oz bottle of pumped milk around 8, then he might take a really short nap but wakes up and wants to feed some more until around 10. I'm wondering if the cluster feeding will just disappear when he's ready for an earlier bedtime, or if this is a transition I need to be encouraging somehow at some point?
