@Pumuckl: Yeah, I think it's crucial. My daughter has always been late-almost delayed in her physical milestones. She picked up the balance bike easily at 2, and then her light weight pedal bike right before she turned 4. A heavier bike - she wouldn't have been interested.

DS1 (who was always a little behind on his motor skills) loves his scooter (he got it at 3, and is 4 now). He isn't into bikes at all.

DD1 loved the scooter starting around 2.5.

We also got her a balance bike at 2, but she didn't really love it for more than 2min at a time until she was almost 3.5. We had a block party and all of the boys (and older girls) were flying up and down the street on hers, and the peer pressure got to her! She figured it out that day and loved it! Then we got her a regular bike for her 4th bday and she learned to ride it in about 5min :)

@LilSprinkles: this is exactly what we did and he got his pedal bike (as he calls it) last weekend a little before his birthday. It took him 30min to figure out pedaling and holding his balance and he was off and would ride his bike everyday if it were possible. Oh and I second @sarac: we made sure to get a light weight bike that he can easily handle by himself. That really boosts his confidence as he's never been an overachiever on gross motor skills.

We got DS a balance bike when he turned 2. He's almost 3.5 now, and we are planning on getting him a big kids bike for his 4th birthday.

That's a really heavy bike. She might have an easier time with a lighter one. If you're eager for her to get riding, you might consider buying something lighter. Check out this link if you're interested -

LO is 3 and he finally has developed big love the scooter even though he's had it for over a year. He's quite fast on it & is able to use it without much help so it's quite cool. The bike was a bday gift for his bday so still very new...& because we haven't taken him out on it much it will probably take a while to master it.

My kids aren't interested in bikes/trikes, but they've always loved their scooters (and my first didn't walk until almost 17 months, so she's not an early adopter of things :silly: ) Maybe start with shorter distances like the neighborhood park to build up her stamina before big walks?

For DS #1, he had his trike from 2 years old up until we moved and put so many miles on it that it fell apart, so like 4 years old or so. Last summer, my dad got him a bike for his birthday. He rides it, but isn't confident in it yet. I'm hoping that for the summer, he'll get more into it as he's closer to 5.

With DS #2, he's a late walker, but loves being outside even when cold. For his second birthday, he's getting a trike like his brother did, though he'd be content to chill in his stroller and walk with me for a long time.

My older LO got into the scooter around 3. We walk everywhere so he would/does ride when my younger LO is in the stroller. He got into bike riding at 4. We live in an apartment so he can't really ride whenever he wants, but he likes family bike rides or riding when my husband is jogging.

My younger LO has loved the scooter since she was about 2.5. Sometimes we go out with it and we end up pushing her on it when she gets too tired to scoot.

@Anagram: Thanks so much ... my LO didn't walk until 15 months, and has always been a bit "late" on the gross motor side of things. Nothing I worry about - she's also generally cautious - so your point really reminded me that maybe she just needs more time until she feels confident on them.

Your LO's scooter tricks sound very cute. :)

My oldest just really got into her scooter and she'll be 4 in July. We got her the scooter for her 2 year old birthday because they are ubiquitous in our neighborhood, but my oldest has always been slow to physical milestones so it took her foreeeevvvvvvver to figure out how to lean to turn, and she never wanted to go long distances until then.

But just in the last couple of months, she has really gotten it, and she happily rides her scooter to school and back (about a half a mile walk each way), or to doctor's appointments (about .8 of a mile), to parks, etc. She also now does tricks on her scooter, like she does "ballet" on it (that's what she calls it--she will lift one leg high in the air while turning a circle, or do a grand jete with one leg up behind her).

My son recently got into his bike, I would say in the last year, and he just turned 6. Frankly, he's doing stuff like burnouts and wheelies, which makes my heart race but he loves it and I think it really was just a time thing.

The scooter isn't really his favorite, he zooms around on it, but it's not like we take it for long walks as I end up scooting it home.

LO is 3 ... she loves being outside. She would play in dirt/mud/rocks for hours if she could. She has a bike and a scooter that she always expresses interest in, but when we get more than a block or two away, she tells us she wants us to carry it the rest of the way.

I don't really mind, but I find myself telling her no to bike/scooter requests and encouraging walks instead (I'm pregnant and her bike weighs over 20 lbs - I don't want to carry it!!).

I'm guessing she'll really get into it this summer, but can we encourage longer rides sooner than later? Ideas?
