Mine started at 4 months with mama and dada and she is very advanced verbally. At 14 months she has about 40 words. She's also not walking, just so you don't think she's some kind of super baby. But I think that 4 months is the super advanced early end of things. 6 months is the middle of the road average, and later than that is still normal. Up to 8 months, I believe.

It's hard to remember even a few months ago, but I think my LO started babbling with consonants right around 4 months. Before that it was just a bunch of cooing. If your LO has been on target for other milestones, I don't think it's quite time to worry yet. She'll get there!

@zippylef: @Honeybee: Thank you ladies for making me feel better about this. I don't know why I started to panic all of a sudden, but my lo has hit or been ahead of all her milestones so far so I think I just need to be patient!

@betsyboop: fingerscrossed! My baby cant say ma-ma sounds either. and her dadada sounds more like tha-tha-tha because of how her tongue is when she tries to talk. I'm sure it will all work out in the end

DS didn't start consonant vowel combination until just recently, around 7 months. He made a lot of noises before that, but not true babbling until a few weeks ago.

I think Mrs. Jacks mentioned that there's no cause for concern on the babling front until 9 months? Probably if you posted on her wall she'd be able to tell you for sure, but I thought it was about 9 months.

@betsyboop: I've heard a lot of people say that some babies become more advanced in one area of milestones. Like C, she has always been advanced in social and fine motor milestones. She smiled her first real social smile before she was a month old. She laughed super early, etc. BUT, she's a little behind in gross motor skills. She didn't roll at all until almost 6 months old.

Anyway, my point is that babies learn at their own pace. I freaked out when C didn't start rolling until way late. She will start doing it. :) Just give her time.

@DpeachLu: Maybe i just don't know the difference either? My lo also says mmmm a lot when she's self soothing in her crib, but no distinct ma ma or da da sounds yet. Hopefully she will be chatty at the doctor in a few weeks too!

@zippylef: Right, like real word sounds. I haven't heard any of those yet :(

Babbling as in making actual word sounds, right? Like "da-da-da" or "ma-ma-ma"?

C was about 5 months old.

Mine is 6.5 months old and now she mostly says dadadada over and over and somtimes aaaaaaaaah in different octaves. She doesnt really give me M sounds or B sounds except when she cries and is angry she makes bububu or mumumu sounds.

Around 2 months she started with vowels and would say eewww and ergh but doesnt do those anymore.

@betsyboop: I'm not an xpert or anything but I think every baby is different so if she is making some vowel sounds like you said, I would give her a few more months to get out the consonants, especially if the doctor agrees

@betsyboop: at my daughters 6 month check up I said the same exact thing to the doc and then she pointed out a consonant to me, I just couldnt tell the difference? Now at 7 months they are starting to sound more noticeable. Maybe it will be the same?
Luckily the day of her check up dd was in a chatty mood and the DR. was able to hear!

She makes noises and has for quite some time but no babbling with consonants yet. Just lots of eehhhh and aaahhhhh. Our 6 month appointment is in 3 weeks and I will most definitely be asking the doc about that!

I haven't been one to compare and obsessively track milestones but I was reading something today that said that babies start to babble (ma-ma, ba-ba) between 4 and 6 months. My LO is almost 6 months and hasn't started, and I'm kind of starting to panic! Any thoughts?
