My daughter would occasionally graze from 6-12 mos.

My son loves solids. LOVES them. I literally can’t believe how much this kid can eat. More than his sister! But even now at 12 months it does not appear to have impacted his breastmilk intake. He still nurses like a fiend. But man does he love his food.

I say embrace the love of solids. It’s a lot easier having a baby that loves to eat than one who you worry over starving herself because she doesn’t seem to have any interest.

All babies are different. Follow your baby’s lead.

Both of my girls weren’t eating multiple times a day until close to 8-9 months, but we also did baby led weaning and they just weren’t super interested in solids until around that time.

You could always send a small amount of puréed food at first, and up it as you go along.

@Littlebit7: @Sams Mom: Good to know! The pediatrician said at LO's 4 month appointment that he was definitely actively teething, but nothing has popped through yet so I have no idea... will look for him to get more interested as teething progresses...

I definitely agree with what @Littlebit7: said. My son was an early teether (4 at 4 months), and seemed to be more about food long before other kids his age that didn't have teeth yet.

@periwinklebee: does your LO have any teeth yet? I found mine was more interested in finger foods one he started teething; I think gumming stuff helped with the discomfort. He just popped his first tooth two days ago.

@MaryM: Hah, yes to being *that* mom. Lol, I try... My LO may well be overeating. In the past six weeks he went from the 30th to the 70th percentile in weight  but is 90th for height, and I figure better to overfeed than underfeed!

@Littlebit7: That's awesome! Looking forward to when my LO warms up to finger foods.

This is totally a second kid move, but my 7 month old has just been eating whatever I have out. This morning was a kodiak cake pancake, raspberries, and yogurt mixed with prunes. He's a machine.
I still watch for allergens and introduced stuff like PB and eggs separately. But he's a machine and will eat anything and everything i give him.

And yesterday, we fed him three times. Because DH only gave him one T of oatmeal in the morning (when he usually has four!) and he woke up from a nap ravenous. By the end of the day, he caught up food wise, but was short on milk (so as I predicted, he woke up before midnight for his last bottle)

I try to focus more on the full day of food/milk, not on individual snacks/meals.

We started sending oatmeal to daycare like a week after he started eating it at home? I sent just an ounce or two (because that's all he'd eat at dinner time) and they practically begged me to send more! He eats a TON more earlier in the day when he's more well rested.

We started food at like 4 months 1 week. So by 4.5 he was having 4T of oatmeal (measured dry) at daycare, and then 1 or 2 at night with an ounce or two of fruit/veggie puree.

I still send the normal amount of milk in bottles, and he still drinks most of it (sometimes he won't finish the bottle after his oatmeal, but it's made with 4oz of milk, so I'm not too concerned if he drinks 3 oz instead of all 7)

At first I worried because it seemed like he was eating SO MUCH (32 oz of milk a day PLUS 6 or 7 oz in his oatmeal), but then he dropped a night bottle so it all evened out.

@periwinklebee: if he is getting his normal amount of breastmilk then its? fine to add morev solids in. The main problem is when people reduce the breastmilk to fit in more solids. Also I thr beginning they can't eat that solid food anyway so sending in a little somthing to ease the jealousy doesnt sound like it will affect how much breastmilk he consumes

We did 1 meal a day at 5 months, 2 meals at 6 months, 3 meals at 7 months. When I posted a similar thread 2 years ago that was the response from most people, adding a meal each month.

E started lunch at daycare around 6.5-7 months and breakfast just after 8 months. She is way into finger foods/table food and thus isn't eating vast quantities of food at a single setting. Her milk needs have not shifted beyond the initial shift to all daytime bottles. I waited until daycare told me that she was acting hungry and in the case of breakfast trying to steal food.

Also, because we only did bottles before naps (solids when she woke up) we also introduced water during meal times.
I would only put 1-2oz in her bottle, so that she would have something to drink with her meal. We only did this at home, not at daycare. (some people recommend putting the water in a sippy cup, so you can try that if you want.)

And to your last comment, we started sleep training DD right around 6 mo too, and I think having the food and oatmeal for dinner, then a bottle for bed really helped her stay asleep!

We started solids at just under 6 months. (Solids meaning store-bought baby food puree and baby oatmeal.) For the first two weeks, we only did solids at dinner time.
Then daycare asked us if we could starting bringing in food at lunch, because DD was grabbing their hands wanting the spoons for the other kids at daycare. They said that she was sitting in the chair with her mouth wide open, waiting for food.

So week three of solids, we started bringing food in for DD at daycare. She did not reduce her milk quantity either.

So if you LO is hungry, send the food!

LO is around 6.5 months and we've been doing solids once per day for a couple of weeks. He has zero interest in finger foods so far - I offer a bit at every meal and he just makes a face and spits them out - but *loves* purees of fruits and veggies.

Daycare says LO has a growing appetite and is often no longer satisfied with his 3 5 oz bottles. They recommended sending solids with him for lunch, as he also gets envious sometimes when he sees the other babies eating (he's the youngest in his class and the only one not eating solids for lunch). I agree that he would probably enjoy solids more than extra milk in his bottles. But when I googled there's so much stuff of the "breast is best" flavor, warning against replacing milk with solids too quickly. I'm just curious what others have done in practice. Follow the baby's lead and give them solids whenever/to the extent they're interested, or take a more gradual approach?
