She didn't start actually sitting through a book until 18+ months. She was always interested before that, but she couldn't sit still long enough.

At 22 months, were at the point where we can sit and read a whole book (or 2-3) to her at bedtime.

LO is 10 mo and would NEVER sit for a book, but I just read them anyway (while he crawls around). He does like to handle them physically so I just continue to read every day.

This thread is making me feel so much better. I really want C to love books so I'll keep working with him, but won't force the issue too much.

It seems like I should invest in some Touch and Feel books and books with flaps. We have a lot of books, but none of those. Now that I think about it, the one book he tolerates best is one that has music that plays with certain pages. He probably just needs something a little more interactive for this age. Thanks for your input!

DS has always loved books (like at 13 months he could sit for 40 minutes and read books). I think most of it is just innate personality, but I also always quit when he got annoyed.

I'd have lots of high contrast books at 8 months. I really like Cluck and Moo... And pretty soon touch and feel books will be great...those might be more engaging for lo.

DS is almost 15 mo and within the past month or so, he's starting to show an interest. And by interest, I mean he will pick up a book to play with it or bring it over to us to read him a page or two and then want to do something else. We have one book that he loves b/c it's a touch a feel book.

Early, but we intoruduced them from the get up. He started reacting more at around 3 months and he tarted having favorites and wonderful story times at around 6 or 7 months.

i think that while one can encourage reading, ultimately it's up to the child's disposition and personality, which will change over time (at least i hope it will since LO is not showing any great love for books right now). we have read to LO every day since birth, set out books in all the rooms, have touch and feel books, flap books--we've done everything "right". however storytime is usually me reading to no one in particular as LO toddles around. he is almost 13 months. in the past week he has started to flip through the books on his own and sometimes carries one over to us (which we start reading of course) until 2 seconds into it he wants to do something else. still, it's encouraging!

DD loves books and has since at least 6 months. Like other PPs, she particularly loved touch-and-feel or lift-the-flap books at your LO's age.

My LO's favorite toys have been books since the very beginning when she first started becoming aware of her environment. I attribute a lot of it to my nanny reading to her constantly, but as she's gotten older, she also enjoys turning the pages, opening flaps, pulling tabs, etc.. We are also very lucky to have been gifted so.many.keeps, and I rotate them in and out, so there's always fresh. At 13 months, books are still her favorite.

I think there are lots of tactics to encourage playing with books - my LO has always been obsessed and a few things that I think help are having them at his level, touch & feel books, books with real pictures, having books in every room of the house, and reading "around" him - while he walks, I read, and he comes over often and sits to look. We don't really focus on him sitting still and being read to, although we do try to do that 2 times a day, but if he'd rather take it and look at it, we let him.

Since around 3 months, we always read to Xander at night before bed and he didn't really seem interested at all. But by 7-8 (maybe 9?) months, he seemed interested in books (specifically Open the Barn Door flap book). He loves opening the flaps himself!

About two weeks ago she started being interested. It HAS to be the Bright and Early Board Book, though, the Dr. Seuss ones. She ALWAYS goes for "there's a wocket in my pocket" and brings it over to us for us to read it to her. I think b/c it's bright freaking yellow. But yeah, books are a new thing. And only that one book. It's so weird.

She's 14 mo and loves looking through her board books. She can "read" them over and over. However, it's harder now to read a book to her b/c she squirms a lot, hoping that gets easier soon.

DS is just about 8 months old. We've tried reading books off and on since he was probably about 2.5-3 months old and he always try to get away, close the book, etc. and shows absolutely no interest. I make him sit through 2-3 books whenever we try to read but it's like pulling teeth. These are fun, colorful books, too!

When did your LO like reading/looking at books?
