7-7.5 months i would say. We started BLW around 6-6.5 months. She took to it pretty quickly and now at 12 months can eat me under the table, despite only having 2 teeth !

@coopsmama: We went through a horrible gagging phase, so bad that EI talked about feeding therapy. Everything triggered projectile vomiting! I never imagined he'd be where he is now, eating anything I hand him. The first thing I remember him really gnawing on was a banana - he saw me eating a banana and got angry so I handed it to him and he went to town. I just cut off the peel an inch or two at a time and he works on it! Instead of slicing around (which makes it easy to break off) I slice down and cut sections of the peel off with scissors.

We didn't start solids until 7 months. It took about a month before she was interested. So at 8-9 months??

@Mae: My son was like that and was gnawing from the start. We successfully did BLW with him but my DD doesn't gnaw at all so this has been a totally different experience.

@spaniellove: Ok, then there's hope for DD! I have had to start with really thin purées for her which is totally different than our experience with #1 so I've been perplexed on what to do. I can't wait to make it to the more solid food stage - I'm over preparing thin purées for her. She has the strongest gag reflex though and anything with a hint of texture throws her off!

Hmm...he's 8 mo now and I feel like somewhere after 7.5 mo it happened. We started with BLW, then backtracked to purees, then nothing, then very thin purees, really thick purees, and now a combination of BLW, finger foods, and chunky purees. He has 2 teeth coming in but has been trying to chew for a while now! Like today he ate kimbap torn into small pieces, cheese cubes (trying to ease our way out of dairy allergy), toast strips with hummus, and I think he gnawed on a whole peeled banana.

We started with BLW and avocado at 5.5 mo so I feel like sort of from the start? But maybe not really intentionally chewing to eat then so much as she just gnawed(gnaws, still) on everything so it was natural. I feel like she really started to get the idea of eating (the process... pick it up, put it in mouth, chew, and swallow) when we started feeding her puffs at 7 or maybe 7.5 mo. She's 9 mo now and still no teeth. She does still have a hard time chewing things but I'm hoping that will get better when she has some teeth.

...gumming/"chewing" solids even if they didn't have many teeth?

My DD is 7 months and still hasn't seemed to figure it out and I'm trying to remember when they normally start doing that.
