I let DS sleep on his tummy when he was one month old. He hated being swaddled and wouldn't sleep long on his back. For the first month, I had him sleeping on my chest so we were stomach-to-stomach. I figured I'd give the tummy sleeping a try and he took to it immediately. I was paranoid at first, but I was comfortable enough with my decision. My DS knows how to roll over from tummy to back but not the other way around! He can't sleep on his back, but gets lots of tummy time. Our pediatrician commented on how perfectly round his head is......little does she know......Hahahaha.

@buffalove: this makes me feel so much better! I am going to put a call into her pediatrician just to ask but I've been trying to do lots of tummy time today trying to get her practice on her tummy and encourage rolling back again. Hopefully this only lasts a few days like your LO!

LO slept on her tummy at 2 weeks, It was the only way she could sleep and still to this day if we put her on her back she will wake up screaming. She was able to turn her head at 3 weeks. Rolled at 3 months

We started at 8 weeks because of severe reflux, but I was a wreck about it. If he didn't have reflux, I would have waited until he could roll himself on to his tummy himself.

He started rolling around 4 months and we swaddle weaned him then. Pretty much immediately he started sleeping on his belly immediately; we'd put him down on his back and he'd roll to his belly to sleep. He didn't seem to like it at first (would wake up crying on belly) but that only lasted a few nights.

@autumn865: Back is best until they are able to roll from back to belly and belly to back on their own. Having said that our baby slept on her belly from as early as 8 weeks because that was the ONLY way she would sleep.

I agree with PP, once she flips onto her belly on her own I will let her sleep on her tummy. She always falls asleep on us while on her stomach and I think she prefers it, but I'm holding off until I'm confident she can flip on her own.

My LO also just started flipping in his crib last week. The first couple nights were like you described - he'd flip over on his tummy and get upset when he realized he couldn't get back. After a few nights of this, he seems to have gotten comfortable sleeping on his tummy, so no more night waking the past 3 or 4 nights. Yay! I still put him down on his back but I dont roll him back over if he's sleeping comfortably on his tummy. My ped said that once he started turning on his own it was fine to let him sleep on his tummy.

We started letting LO nap on her tummy at 10 weeks. She didn't sleep on her tummy at night until we swaddle weaned at 4.5 months. If they're rolling onto their tummy themselves it's okay to leave them.

LO started sleeping on his tummy at 6.5 months when we swaddle weaned and sleep trained at the same time.

I've heard that it's ok to let them sleep on their tummies when they flip onto their tummy on ther own.

When did your LO star sleeping on their tummy? How did you know they were ready?

Our LO just learned to roll onto her tummy but has yet to learn how to roll back. For the last 3 nights she has been continuously rolling over, getting scared an starting to cry hysterically. We/ I have been flipping her nearly every hour all night. At 4am she flipped but didn't cry and just fell back asleep. I waited 30 minutes until she was fully asleep and flipped her. They say back is best but until when?
