My daughter started saying 'hi (person)' and 'bye (person)' at about 14 months. At 19 months she started saying real subject object verb (Bebe need grapes) sentences, and now at 24 months she's finally mastered prepositions and first person and possessive pronouns.

T seems a little late in the speech dept. He was an early babbler and his babble sounds like actual language (just not one we know!) with real intonation etc. But he only has a handful of actual words and doesn't string any together - he's 15 1/2 months.

B started saying word phrases around 12/13 months. He says "all done", "my ball", "my dogs", etc. He loves the word "my".

Around 12/13 months Chloe was able to say 2 very simple word sentences, like "I need", but it wasn't until more recently that she strung together bigger words and phrases.

Now she says things like "mama I go outside" or "daddy throw ball". She's 22 months.

DS was saying 2-3 word sentences around 19-20 months. Now at 2.5 years, he says paragraphs!

@MrsMccarthy: DH and I aren't terribly verbose, but our son never stops talking! We always wonder where he gets it (must be from my dad :-).) Howerver, we have always read quite a lot to him.

Ellie started putting two words together right after age two. Her first two words together was the day before her second birthday. She was slow to develop with regards to speech.

Lorelei was putting two words together at about 14/15 months and now at 17 months is able to get most points across pretty clearly.

Intelligence-wise I feel the girls are on a pretty level playing field, but Lorelei is able to express more things at a younger age so it is easier in some ways to see her mind working (if that makes sense). Like last night she had blueberries and said, "Mama-- pattern. Lita pattern" to which I absentmindedly responded, "yes, good job. Patterns are nice aren't they?" only to look over as she pointed; "big, little, big, little, big," and started putting another small blueberry in the line. I bet Ellie might have been able to do the same thing at her age, but she wasn't a talker, so I doubt I'd have noticed. BUT... Ellie would sit still at that age for books upon books, and it's all I can do to get Lorelei to sit in my lap for the Kim and Carrots part of a babybug magazine, so there you have it. ;)

LO started talking at 18 months so he was behind compared to most. He caught up quickly and started speaking in sentences after he turned 2. At 28 months he has conversations with us, and it's such a fun stage.

@FutureMrsMcK: how old is your LO?

I feel like mine, who is 21 months, has been about average/on track with language overall. She had a decent number of words and signs by 15 and 18 months. She could say things like "all done" and "more please" at that time but I don't really count those as sentences since they are sort of the same idea.

She was able to sign "daddy work" around 16/17 months. I would say since around 19 months she has started saying some sentences, like "I see it" "I love you mama" etc., and she is coming up with more and more all the time.

It is such a fun time!

Tor babbled since 3 months or so and even said a few words but I too have noticed its become more speech like abs nuanced as he gets closer to a year old. I too am curious what averages look like, although I do believe it can be a pretty broad window anywhere from 14-26 months.

I have read that blabber mouths ( like my husband and I) tend to have earlier more frequent yappers. Same oes for children who are read aloud to often. Have you been doing a bit of both?

Like 2-3 word sentences?

E's been slower on babbling/speaking (he just started really babbling not too long ago) but recently he's just constantly babbling to us, and I'm starting to hear a real ebb and flow with his "speech"...saying something, pausing and looking at me expectantly, waiting for a reply before starting again.

And I feel like he's understanding more of what I'm saying. I'll tell him we need to put his shoes on so we can go outside and he'll bring his shoes (well usually just one, lol) and go to the front door. Or when I tell him to go to his room to go to bed he'll walk to his crib.

This is all pretty new for us, but seeing him start to grasp language more is really exciting to watch, and I'm eager for him to be able to actually talk to us.

When was your LO able to string together sentences?
