@cyndistar3: I'm not as much concerned about her getting messy as I am her flinging food around the kitchen. As it is, she likes to casually drop pieces of food on the floor so I can just imagine the increased trajectory she'll get with a spoon and fork, lol.

@Red: Doesn't seem late to me! My daughter goes to daycare so I check out what the other kids are doing to make sure she isn't behind in anyway. And yes, it will make a mess unfortunately! Oh the mess, lol! I used to put an art smock type thing on my daughter for meal times because she would make such a mess and I didn't want her clothes to get dirty after every meal so you could try that, too.

@Red: Messes never bothered me really, I just put her in her high chair in only a diaper so I could just throw her in the bath after if it got too bad.

@Andrea: Oh good. For some reason I kept thinking that I was starting her really late. Probably also a good idea to start with the spoon first.

@cyndistar3: Wow, 10 months!

I've been delaying giving LO the fork and spoon cause I'm dreading the messes but now that she's one, I'm thinking that I'll have to take the plunge. She's been feeding herself with her fingers for the last few months so hopefully she'll catch on quickly.

spoon was a bit after a year. we started the fork at around 15 months but she still isn't great at stabbing some things with it now at 19 months.

@Mrs. Bee: well she was sitting in a highchair eating things with her fingers pretty early so I just gave her those little plasic utinsils to try out and she caught on really fast.

@cyndistar3: wow that's early! i don't think we let charlie use a fork until 15 months. and because he hated eating, we always fed him too. not sure when he mastered it (still has trouble sometimes), but i just bought some kid chopsticks for him!
